| | | I don't edit my photos, and I was wondering how these two look to you all. I'll post more if anyone wants me to. And yes, I know they're blown out, but given that I have a cheap point-and-shoot I can't really control that, short of editing.
Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing. |

| | | not bad for a point and shoot man! the detail on the dog is nice - and i dont mind the lens flare either. the first one could use some post processing but for right out of the camera it looks as good as you could hope for. the compositions are nice in both!

| | | #1: There is not much you can do about the highlights here with no post and a point&shoot. The composition is lacking a little too. The lines actually lead my eye off of the image instead of up the tower. #2: You could put a large defuser infront of the light source to soften the highlights.

| | | If you want more from a P&S, look up cokin filters and lenses. They make some products for P&S as well as cell phone cameras. I agree, right out of the P&S, these are not bad. Google has a free editor you can use too.

| | | I never post in this forum for fear of coming off like an ass but I gotta agree with adv. almost point for point. I'm actually reading a great book right now from photographer David duChemin titled within the frame. He discusses composition a lot. A few of the fundamental tools of photography are lines and light. (but that's only a few and all we need to concentrate on here) This may be a little more in depth than you were hoping for but i'd like to spark some thought. Image 1 - the tower: What are you as a photographer trying to say? Where are you directing my attention? And why am I interested? Theres nothing that particularly grabs me with this image. The lines are confusing and the tower mast is too centered in the frame for me. The sky is the strongest point of the photo. Also this photo was shot in the middle of the day when the light is most harsh. It could benefit greatly by a more interesting composition. Image 2 - the dog: I like this one a lot aside from the hard light. I like that the pup is not looking directly at the camera or centered in the frame. This has the potential to be a very cool image if not for the harsh light coming from the left. Remember, the eye is always drawn to the lightest part of the photo first. These are a great start and please keep at it. You are not as limited as you may think by a point and shoot. As David duChemin would say "gear is great but vision is better" I hope I didn't come off as an ass here. That was not my intention. I was more interested in causing you to pause and ask yourself "what am I trying to say" the next time you go to push that shutter release. [/s]

Not at all. This sort of advice is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, everyone.
