Active security in places to be torn down?

Seriously, who is paying for this? I live in the Minneapolis area, and usually when I spot a place that's abandoned I stop and check it out at some point. Most of the places I find still have lights, cameras, door alarms turned on and stay that way for months until they get torn down. Once they start pulling stuff out in preparation for demolition you can get in, but there's nothing left to see. How does this make financial sense at all? If they couldn't afford to stay open, how can they afford all this security?

I live in the same area you do, which is great for exploring! However, UE's local popularity has brought on a real awareness amongst cops and building-owners alike. I'm amazed security is as lax as it is.

One certain abandoned place was bought with plans to be turned into condos (once sporting "live here" in the windows). They even had a website! Now the only things living there are pigeons, and I hear they're often late on rent ;) Somewhat-reliable sources inform me that the main reason it was not made into condos was the frequency of which it was "visited", more often then not by taggers and drunk bro-dude college kids who like breaking windows and destroying whatever they could.

Because of the lax security here (back in 2006 you could walk right through the front door) the building slowly fell into shambles and became relatively unusable. I'm sure the owner came to this realization, and it's now boarded up all the way around the sides and at least 20 feet high. Without any knowledge of buildering or the innate ability to climb like a monkey (that I'm blessed with), you can't get in. Period.

Lots of abandoned mills and factories sit on prime real estate, especially along the river in the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, our state government has a knack for not giving a crap about the history of our cities. Buildings are being sealed up and demolished left and right, so in the name of all that is awesome go see some places before they're all gone. It's been wonderful November weather this year in the cities, and I've been making sure to see all I can! Lots of places are still accessable if you do a thorough scouting trip in daylight and get creative.

One last tip: if a place is in the process of being torn down, access is most likely easy. Wake up at 7:30AM on a Sunday and visit, it's highly unlikely you'll bump into construction workers/cops and the lighting is SPECTACULAR!

Hope that was useful or interesting.
