Exploring Ohio's Forgotten and Historical Sites
| | | Toledo House of Corrections; Whitehouse, OH < on 11/6/2011 4:27 PM >
| | | The Toledo House of Corrections served as Toledo's workhouse from 1918 to 1991. Prisoners who served time there for misdemeanors and DUI convictions worked on the farm, raising crops and livestock. The prison was pretty much self sustaining for a number of years before the cost outweighed the benefit of the workhouse. A new regional jail was constructed in the early 1990s and all operations were relocated there. The grounds were purchased by the parks district, who currently owns the property. The prison is locked up pretty well and surrounded by a chain-link fence. Park police regularly patrol the grounds 24/7. Our group was able to obtain permission to photograph the prison. A page with more information, more photos, and a video will be posted on our website in the future.

Thanks! It was actually very similar to the Junction City Prison in that it was dormitory-style prison instead of the traditional jail cells. I wish Junction City was still standing, it was a short drive for me and served as my trusty backup exploration whenever I got the itch and couldn't find anywhere new. I'm afraid the Toledo workhouse may suffer a similar fate because the park system doesn't have the money to renovate the building and it is seen as a hazard.
