lol i know. thanks. but i demand perfection from myself. its horrible.

theres what, 21 shots in this thread? out of 36. the others were too black. that means im overexposing a lot. which bothers me, i should know better. i dunno.

Actually, to be serious the exposure seems awesome in 1 & 2, but there is a bit of overexposure in the rest to some degree. But to be honest, "normal" people w/o the nerdy nature of perfection under their lens at EVERY take via. OCD problems (namely me) would consider it spot on.. which I think is the concensus on the thread, which I agree on the "whole".

However, my sense is that it's a little less contrasty than desired. I find that I myself with film have a problem of going TO far on exposure and loose the contrast because the negatives I get from my 4x5 end up getting way to thin - i.e. I over exposure a lot, because of my night shots - a psychotic task in itself with 4x5 and technically it will drive you mad for night photography on getting all the settings right.

Naturally you can fix this with post-editing in Photoshop, but well .. that's just cheating now isn't it?!?!

If you are looking for a 4x5, there are many fine choices, and of all the nazi-trolls on film, Yokes is by far the best source. He gave me heads up on my current setup a while back. Also medium format is real easy to shoot and lots of labs locally between Toronto, Buffalo, to NYC still stock the film w/o special order and will develope right there inhouse.

You won't go wrong with a Mamiya 645 setup, with 45mm all the way out to 200mm depending on what you want to do. Hassleblad is a little more quarky, but they have/had amazing glass for many of the 500 series shots. I use a Mamiya 645 Pro TL w/ an auto-winder and a meter. I also use a Rollieflex series V, 3,5 (I think that's right), and a couple other film bodies. I prefer my Rollie because of the steam-punk vibe it gives off (har) and a lot of people instantly recognize it. Not to mention its been serviced (EXTENSIVE CLA) and the shots I get out of it are amazing. Plus its easy to store next to everything in my digital bag, because its a "box" camera - TLR (twin lens reflex).

I just moved right past 35mm because I can do the same stuff with my digital in that size. Large format and medium format are just great for negative size and are approachable from a financial stand point.

God speed. Film sucks, but man is it addictive because the process that goes into producing great shots .. which I rarely do, but when I DO get all my settings right its magic. I compare it to hitting a golfball 220 yards after hitting 500 rug burners that went less than 50.

thanks for taking the time writing all that. ive thought about trying medium format but i dunno. im definitely not going to do 4x5 hahaha. too much of a hassle.

i agree with you though, film can be finicky, but when you nail a shot, its amazing.
