Excuse me, but what is this place?

First few shots are of the bridge/a drowned grocery cart. But then...

My best guess is that it's a military dock. Underneath you get some cool tunnel views. Since there haven't been many navy battles requiring the usage of this dock lately, it's been falling apart ever since. If you'll notice, the water washed out the brick onto the rock slabs and created a rainbow.

That looks like Verrazano-Narrows bridge in New York City ...
Could be wrong. Do an image search on google.

I know that, I meant what are the tunnel-like thingies there used for? What are their purposes?

Perhaps they are wave breaks or flood containment chambers. I don't know bridges

Hi superphoenix, I am nearly sure that (from the holidays I've have had [I'm from Australia] that the bridge is the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

250464.jpg (29 kb, 415x332)

"The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City at the Narrows, the reach connecting the relatively protected upper bay with the larger lower bay Wikipedia"

The drain/tunnel thingy is (I think) a technique called 'Hold the line', Hold the line means any type of structure that is put in place to help reduce waves from damaging any nearby structure or beaches from erosion.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedi...ring#Hold_the_line

The tunnels are mainly put in sea walls to help stop wave energy and to make the structure more stable by giving the wave more 'distance' to slow down.

Wow, people think I don't know my own area... By "this place" I was referring to what I now know is called a wharf. It was used as a ferry site from Staten Island to Brooklyn, but the Verrazano Bridge has long since rendered it useless.

Not sure, do you have a good overview shot of the outside? Also, next time just post the relevent pictures instead of uploading them all and then telling us to ignore this one and that one, etc. Thirdly, its by no means a requirement, but you'll keep from causing a lot of friction if you upload the images to a hosting site like flickr or photobucket then link to the images with image tags, like so.

Yeah, thanks, it was the easier option but I only figured out how to do it recently.

It might have something to do with Fort Hamilton which used to be in that area. The bridge and development have almost completely erased that site.

Sorry about the wrong information, check NYC history relating to the bridge and see why it was built, it should give you some information about the wharf's.

It's pretty cool actually. (This is more of what I got from the New York Aquarium, who seemed to know quite a bit about it):
Apparently, in 1741, Benjamin Franklin was the Postmaster of Brooklyn, and used the wharf to send mail to Boston and Georgia. During the Battle of Brooklyn, the Civil War, and towards the end of WWII, the military used the place for their ships. Pretty amazing to think that I stood in a place where the great Ben Franklin also went...
This makes it a historic landmark, albeit one that's locked up, crumbling, and of great obscurity to the general public. They're hoping to build a marine science lab for kids here. Who knows, I might advocate for it! (The site's not being used anyway, except by curious passerbys and fishermen).

A picture my dad took three years ago has the wharf poking out at the very very left.

The most comprehensive view of the outside/top (that is, if you ignore the words that someone had to put).

Because the UER gallery viewer thing is awkward to use, you have to mouse over, wait for the images to load (Which they dont always do) then move your mouse away and get to the next image without accidentally mousing over any of the others... its just a bit awkward and annoying and some users get really bent out of shape by it. When you upload and embed the images all you have to do is scroll down.

I agree the gallery creator/viewer is no fun to look at. At least one can uncheck the gallery options when uploading shots to get rid of it (which is easy to miss)
