Me and a friend(also inexperienced in UE) stopped by a place I'd found online. At first I couldn't even find it, because it was dark and I hadn't been there before. The area is behind a few open buildings, and these places were actually built on top of a landfill. What happened was that the ground settled unevenly, making the buildings unsafe by certain standards, and they were abandoned. I learned this from a newspaper article online about how our city is enacting a law that will grant abandoned lots to the city for renovation if the owners do not get it running or sell it. There's a two year period where the owner is given time to do this. The building's picture was in the article online, as well as a few others. I wanted to check it out because it's the only one in an area I knew (I'd gotten lost trying to find a parking spot to another building downtown that I've heard someone is trying to buy).

Anyways, I didn't get it. We parked in front of another building that looks as though it's in the same situation. There was actually a few of them right there. The problem is, there were a lot of cars in front of one of them. And not in bad shape either. After we puzzled over this for a few minutes, my friend pointed out a light. The building with the cars in front of it had a faint glow on the side of the building. A bush was in my way, but the other person was in the passenger seat and could see a little better; he said it looked like the light was coming from some kind of basement. It very well could have been; the light was extremely faint, probably because the people didn't want to get found out. Like I said, it took us at least a minute to realize it was there. And I think the only reason we noticed it is because it was sort of flickering like people were walking in front of it. Again, very faintly, like there was a really dull light and then it was even duller, then it was back to being regularly dull.

Anyways, I got freaked out because my imagination went wild. I kept thinking it could be a meth lab or crack dealers or at the very least very violent teenagers. Add to that the fact we had nothing; no flashlight, no pepper spray, not even a screwdriver (note to self, get some small self defense device to keep in purse) because checking out some explores was an afterthought after the night's activities. I wasn't about to get jumped or killed or mugged or anything because I wanted to get in someplace.

If you've gotten this far, I commend your efforts. I know I tend to ramble quite a bit. My question is; what do you think was going on? If it was some teens having an orgy I might go back; if it was a drug deal... I dunno', go back after improv classes? I wasn't confident we both could stick to a story about looking for somewhere to make out. I really do want to go back, but not if it's dangerous, y'know? Perhaps it wasn't a good spot; I mean, the place was described in a newspaper article.

Sorry, but the pictures didn't turn out. I have a little digital point and shoot that doesn't get but five inches ahead. If you want them anyways, I can point out some of the stuff that did get into the pictures. Sorry if any of that was confusing.

If a guy wrote this, he would get railed. But because it is a female...watch and see how it is taken.

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

It was other urban explorers having an orgy.

But in reality, if there were several cars parked out front, could just be a bunch of people hanging out drinking an smoking up. I don't know your area, so I don't know about anything else, but if these are condemned and abandoned buildings, they have just as much right to be there as you do. Walk in and yell freeze! Always good for a laugh/headshot.

100% sure a wild imagination.

If you didn't have a flashlight I'm guessing you went during daylight hours, and if there are lights on, tons of cars and doors open, it's almost certainly something like surveyors, contractors, or people there with the owner or the owner's consent, or something utterly innocuous like other explorers or maybe a photo shoot or something like that. Call it crazy, I've accidentally walked into a softcore porno shoot in an abandoned building and I've got pictures to prove it.

Put yourself in the other people's shoes and view the situation from their perspective. It's not hobos. If the hobos had that many cars, they'd be living in them, not an unsafe building.

It's not crackheads, if they can afford their habit and their car, they can afford a cheap apartment or they'll go shoot up down a back alley in their car (they're not stupid, they know they're not supposed to be there and wouldn't go there unless they had no option.) If they can't afford their habit and their car, they'll sell the car for smack money.

It's not a crack lab because no cooks would be stupid enough to a) set up camp in a building popularized by media, b) leave a car out in the open like a signal flare, much less many which is like an all points bulletin to police something is going down there, or c) not notice you pull up or let you leave alive if they did notice.

Lastly, it's not 'violent teenagers' because that's preposterous, teenagers are little shit-fuckers who are more skittish than house flies.

If you're jittery about meeting people in abandonments, flip through this thread. Most people you'll meet in abandonments are just as nice to you as you are to them.

Take out the shit-fuckers part and that explains why my friend managed to get me too scared to go in.

But I suppose you're right. Except we did in fact go there at night without lights. Like I said, it was a spur of the moment thought. We were actually out dancing until around 10, went searching for a building downtown, then went to this place. I think I should avoid night exploring, because I get too jumpy. Also because I need a flashlight.

I'll go back after school probably on Friday and get better pictures. In hindsight there were probably people that were within screaming distance.

You did the right thing by not going on under prepared and late at night. As a general rule of thumb, if it's obvious someone else is in a place like that and it's somewhere you can come back to later, eat the few dollars you wasted on gas and call it a day. Some people on here will have a lot of bravado (edit: not a shot at dave's above post, he's a good guy) and tell tell you to man up and storm the place, but be realistic and take into account your level of experience dealing with people, the circumstances, and the place, and stay safe. For instance, a lot of time you can get into some sweet places if there is a demo crew or workers on site and you calmly walk up like a boss and tell them you are a photographer looking to expand your portfolio and would like to photo the place.

If you went at night you can most likely rule out contractors or workers as nobody is going to be out working hat late at night. The blue collar world runs pretty much 7am to 7 pm.

More than likely it was a party or maybe a band was playing, or I'd be willing to bet some cash someone was in there playing paintball or airsoft. Either way, you done good, don't write off the location yet and don't get discouraged. You can always come back later.

Lastly, welcome to UER! Feel free to PM me if you have questions or want advice and you get out there and start exploring.

Sounds to me like you have discovered a rave. They frequently are held in abandonments, particularly warehouses and large open basements.

You did the right thing by not going down there to see what was going on, but I suspect you would have been greeted with dope and candy necklaces and not hostility.
