New member in southcentral Alaska (Anchorage/Mat-Su)

I found this site while Googling Alaska's White Alice communication sites, and thought it would be a good place to sign up. I initially wondered why I couldn't become a full member by joining, then I read the FAQ's on that subject. OK, it's a good system in place; it ensures that only people with quality posts & pictures will make it to full membership, and encourage quality posts & pictures.

What I didn't understand (and still don't) is the fact that new members have to wait three days before they can even post in the rookie forums. Is there any intelligent reason for this? Don't people join this site so they can connect with like-minded people, especially in their same geographic area? Once I got my login details all squared away, I clicked on the Rookie Forums hoping to post a thread asking about members in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area. And...

Denied. Gee, that doesn't turn me off of this site at all. Here's a new member, ready to start posting pictures of his urban explorations, and he can't because he's (I assume) too new? He can't be trusted to follow the rules governing the forums, so he has to wait a probationary period? Good business strategy. Way to lure in new members.

So you've probably guessed by now, I only waited the three days to be allowed to post so I could let the admins know I will not be using this site, simply because they don't seem to think new members can post anything good or mature until they wait three days. Childish? Sure. But how smart is it to make someone wait before they can even so much as ask about explorers in their area, who can perhaps help them with tips on local sites?

This may not be the first post ever to broach this subject, but if it's the last, and is the one that makes the admins realize that just MAYBE, new members don't need a probationary period (because they joined to be part of a like-minded community), then I've done my job. Too bad I'm not going to continue being a part of that community (which by definition, actually strives to welcome new members).

Yes. It reduces spam and goes a long way to preventing annoying/dangerous use of this site by people we don't like.

Swivelnuts, exactly what AnAppleSnail has posted here. The wait has nothing to do with our opinions of new members, it is solely to prevent abuse.

For people who are serious about this, they still will be in 3 days.

Apparently 3 days is not long enough in this case.. Usually the waiting period urges a new member to look around and see what's going on here before getting on a soap box. That and it seems to decrease the amount of flammable and redundant first time questions and assertions.

4) Why must I wait seven days before posting?

By restricting new members to a seven day wait, this cuts down on undesirable messages which might be considered spam or malicious. In addition it allows new members significant time to understand how UER works and what sort of guidelines are generally followed.

The information does exist in places you're likely to look. I think the waiting period was longer then and has been reduced. Welcome to UER, and I hope you stick around. There's lots of information and people worth finding.

Your melodramatic overreaction to the 3 day waiting period is proof positive that the waiting period is a good idea.

UER is not a business and does not need new members. It's merely a resource for the community. If people would like to join and contribute, it's to their benefit. If they would like to be passive aggressive and attention-seeking instead, life goes on.

Mostly the 3 day wait eliminates spammers to the board. Occasionally one will wait the three days and the forums get filled up with ridiculous ads for ridiculous products which, hopefully, moderators catch in time and delete thus saving the community from having to deal with crap. But welcome to UER none the less!

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.
