| | | 1. Don't listen to anything anyone says on UER. 2. Bring water. 3. Don't lie to cops. 4. Don't break and enter if you can't handle a breaking and entering ticket. 5. If there's rain, NO DRAINS. 6. I am the infamous Buttram Manfist. 7. Don't overthink an explore or make it more difficult than it is. 8. Learn to climb. No excuses. I'm 330lbs and can climb. 9. Read the threads in the rookie and tutorial threads. 10. Use the search feature if you have questions. 11. No place too small, no place too boring. 12. Don't be 12. Welcome! | | | Buttman nailed it. Oh, and know your own limitations and don't do anything to impress someone that is beyond you abilities. That is how we break bones, get the EMS called out to a place and in turn get the place crucified on the 11 o'clock news as a public safety issue and torn down or locked up tighter than a tics ass.

| | | The best advice i can give you is to read these forums. There are no short cuts and there isnt a condensed version. if you want to learn you're going to have to do some reading. There are probably a half dozen of these "any tips?" threads in the last few pages of the rookie forum, too, so that's a good place to start. Once you've got some specific, focused questions, come on back and ask
Freedom breeds war; and Peace, slavery. So it shall be forevermore: Men who love freedom buy it with their lives, and lovers of peace with their freedom. |

| | | I'd say let someone you trust know where you're going and when to expect you back. I'd rather see you get rescued from a place and the placed demo'd or locked down than them find your body weeks later.

Good advice, but also don't volunteer too much information to the cops. When my group got busted on 9/11, the cops were asking us if we were all English teachers. I kind of nodded along, but my friend pointed to me and was starting to say "Everyone but him--he works for the government." A fact I didn't really want to advertise to the cops.

| | | - Majority of the people on UER don't care who you are or what you do or what you like. (Not being rude, promise!) - Explore during daytime the place you plan to explore at night so you discover all it's risky areas. - Always have a minimum gear with you when you know you might end up going 'sploring: A torch, for example. - Let people know (when and where) you're gon' 'splorin' so if you get in deep shit, they can come get you out. - This here is your gateway to an immense amount of knowledge about UE, from the 'splorers; for the 'splorers. - For photograph inspiration, hit the UE photography section and just go through people's photographs; it's madchills. - Suggest you to read 'Access All Areas' (by Ninjalicious), it helped me out a hella lot with a LOT of UE stuff. - Only go 'splorin' with the people you know / people you trust. - Solo 'splorin' is pretty much a big no no, but you can still go if you really must. - At a UE site, check a floor surface if it'll hold your weight by tapping it lightly or if you're cool with doing the stomping test (tap it a little harder; no euphemism intended, but you can think of it that way if you must) - The one with the camera is more likely to get away if caught by the security, than the one without any credibility props (Great tip from the book 'Access All Areas'!) - Once you 'splore a bunch of places, you'll eventually get a lot of confidence to explore bigger stuff. So don't be disheartened easily if you see people going to the biggest places and you just exploring smaller places. - Smaller groups are good, since with big groups ya'll be easy to get spotted. But as once Loki said (along these lines), "Small groups = good. Big Group = bad. Even bigger group = Best." You might be able to get away most of the time, but maybe not every time, when in a massive group. - If you're aware of asbestos at any UE site you're going to explore, do your best to get a mask or something to prevent breathing it, that shit's actually more serious than people think. Ps: If you wanna talk about anything sexual or cat related, there's always AvChat. Pps: Hello and welcome. [last edit 9/19/2011 7:41 AM by Valkyre - edited 1 times]

| | | Everything Buttram said. Also: -Basic protective gear is nice. You don't need full body armor, but sneakers/boots with good tread, jeans you don't mind ruining, gloves, and a hat to keep spiders out of your hair are good things to have. -If on the rare chance you get intercepted by authorities, tell the truth. I've heard some fantastical stories from UER members, but honesty is always the best policy, especially if you're a shitty liar. "I'm sorry, I'm just a photographer, I wanted to take some pictures of this cool building." -Don't be an asshole on the forums. Be polite, engage in conversations, post photos of your own explores. Don't run around asking for handouts or waving your dick around. I'm still a n00b myself, but I've felt quite welcome here and I think that's because I treaded carefully. If you make a dumbass mistake, take the ribbing and move on, it's just the internet.

Solo sploring is alight, as long as other people know where you are and what you're doing there. Maybe the first few times you go, don't do it alone, but after awhile you can trust your instincts with a place. I find that your senses are also heightened and you'll be more cautious with where you go and how much noise you make, in case there are other people in the place. But yeah if you do go alone, just be careful. You never know what you'll find. The next two points are very good. I nearly stepped through a roof the other day but luckily i did check it first and found a better place to put my feet. But it's always good to check cause chances of injury are rather high if you go through the floor and there could be a few stories between the floor your on and the floor beneath you. Another point i'd add is have a pair of gloves with you. They always come in handy whether it be for handling broken glass or just too keep your hands clean. Most of all enjoy the place you're in.

I solo 'splore all the time, but I live in a rural area. I definitely wouldn't go alone in urban areas or bad parts of town or in really dilapidated buildings.

Good advice that often works. After all, that is what youre doing. Right? A camera is the perfect credibility prop. I'm not too into taking pics, buy my GF is, so that works out well. Also, take more water than you think you will need.
