I'm an artist and I scavenge for useful stuff to make jewelry, steampunk stuff, and bags/pouches (springs, spark plugs, wiring, pipe, fabric off of old furniture, etc.) and the best way to find good stuff is to wander around the old and decaying parts of the city. They're chock full of cast-off stuff that's just waiting to be repurposed. Houses gutted by a fire, eternally-unfinished construction sites, people moving out and clearing out crap to try to get their deposit back, there are any number of similar opportunities to take advantage of people's tendency to look at a thing and just see something broken that needs to be tossed. Not so much "one man's trash is another's treasure" as it is "I take things that are honestly trash and make cool stuff out of it for fun and profit."

Doing urbex just for the sake of it? That happened after I tripped over a curb, fell into a storm drain and spent a couple hours trying to find my way back out. That little adventure was made extra fun by the fact that it was bucketing down rain so hard I could barely see (which is why I tripped over the curb) so I had to slog through knee-deep runoff the whole time I was stuck underground. A few days later, I was telling some of my friends about it and realized that it had actually be really cool, so I decided to find other access points and try it again when it wasn't raining. It keeps being interesting so I keep doing it Plus, I get some pretty cool pictures out of it.

Paved roads and suburban homes? Pfft, that's just the icing; I want the cake.

So here's us on the raggety edge. I aim to misbehave.

For me it was getting myself into all the old military forts around my area growing up. Kind of taking in a sense of the historical value these places have. Didn't really get into shooting them until just a couple years ago. From there I was in abandoned looney bins, hospitals, paper mills, and houses. Been stuck on it ever since, always looking for the next adventure.

If your boots aren't muddy and your pants aren't ripped you did something wrong.

Was out walking with a friend when we stumbled across a group of abandoned buildings next to our college campus. Went back the next afternoon to scout it out, and the rest is history.

I got into urbex via Roof and Tunnel hacking at MIT. There are a good number of people here who routinely (often multiple times per week) explore machine rooms, get onto roofs, and climb shafts inside of active MIT buildings. Urbex/infiltration is just hacking for the real world.

When I was little my dad used to tell me about this place called American Flats out in Virginia City NV where he used to go sneak out with his friends to drink and explore when he was a youngbuck.

It's an old gold ore refinery out in the middle of the hills. In a place where you have to know where it is in order to get there. You don't even know it exists until you're directly in front of it.

Huge structures for what they are, four stories tall, decaying concrete/rebar from the late 1800's. Three main buildings, an underground catacombs area with it exposed to the west side that looks like the Roman coliseum. One of the "rooms" to the north east side is completely submerged for at least two stories and covered with an icky green film. With a good flash light you can see some pretty strange stuff down in the depths.

My dad took me out there when I was 16. We spent the entirety of a Sunday out there. The place is a death trap, aka jungle gym for big kids. The refinery used an in-situ leach process, and the cyanide was pretty rough on the structures in the years later on. I was mesmerized by the whole experience, it was just surreal to me.

I've been hooked ever since.

If you rest, you rust.

I think I somehow stumbled across Infiltration, and I enjoyed reading the stories and looking at the photos. It was a few years before I actually got around to actually going into places, though.

Being told to "stay the hell out of abandoned buildings" by my parents fueled my wanting to go in. I was always well-behaved as a child, and now I've grown into a wild hooligan that loves her some goddamn drains.

My dad likes Rusty things. He used to take me on outtings with him, and we'd go to these old machinery and steam engine graveyards and just shoot all day. My love grew from there ;)

Same here. I don't remember which came first, but at some point in the early 2000s a friend showed me Rob Dobi's "emo girl/boy" illustrations and I poured through his abandonment galleries. I was also linked to the gut-clenching Roswell missile silo story on Infiltration. Thus, a million Google searches were spawned from a scaredy cat.
