| | Marks on Campus tunnels all over < on 9/6/2011 5:44 AM >
| | | There is a lot of construction happening around my campus(es) right now. I noticed right away this year that essentially EVERY manhole is color coded labeled with numbers/letters and arrows pointing where they go, as well as lines sprayed over grass and pavement in between them. Very interested in checking out my schools underground, any tips for what to look for and where when it comes to finding something promising? Spotted a couple with bolts in them- I'm guessing those are hiding something cool =p

| | | The locked or bolted down covers are generally high voltage, or critical communication lines. The color of the spray paint and arrows you're seeing will indicate what is underneath. Red = electrical. orange = communications. blue = water. yellow = gas. white = usually indicates where they will be digging. Of course all of this depends on the painter knowing the code, and having the correct color for what he's marking. But this is a pretty good baseline to work with.

I did this when I was in college. I got a map of campus which showed all of the buildings and as I explored the tunnels I drew them in and marked all of the points of entry.
