Apparently, the plan was to eventually demolish the buildings anyway, so the decision was made to let the fire consume the buildings in order to save the cost of demolition. Though I missed an opportunity to explore Ft. Chaffee, I had an opportunity to explore Fort Wingate in New Mexico a couple of years ago.
