The small community of Carrier is located approximately seven miles due northwest of Enid, the county seat. The area was opened for settlement with the Cherokee Outlet land run in 1893. The site grew from a dispersed rural community into a thriving town at the turn of the twentieth century. The first building was a church built in 1895, which also served as the first school. Solomon Carrier, who erected the area's first store in 1895, was appointed postmaster on May 22, 1897.

The town of Carrier was platted in August 1903 as the railway was planning to construct a line from Enid to Avard. In 1895 Solomon Carrier donated land for a church school, and in September 1898 Northwestern Academy was opened by the Congregational Church Building Society. Basically nondenominational in its admissions policy, the school opened with a faculty of five. It offered classes to prepare students for Kingfisher College and remained open for twelve years. The school is long gone, but a monument notes it's existence.

The community provided the typical services for an agriculture economy, a bank, grain elevators, blacksmiths, a lumberyard, hardware store, etc. Travelers were served by a hotel and a livery stable. The towns maximum population reached just over 700 by 1910, and began a steady decline through the decades. By 1980 it had dropped to around 250, and by the 2000 census it had reached 77 people. Today, it has basically disappeared, with the exception of a church, a few homes, an old grain elevator, and an abandoned school.

Originally built in the early 1920's, the school remained active, adding several additions through the years, serving the surrounding community until 1991, when it was closed and the students consolidated with Enid school district.

I didn't have my flashlight to check out the basement area.

The school was left unattended for several years and then used for storage. It's definitely seen better days and its condition has deteriorated severely. At the current rate, it will probably be nothing but a shell within the next few years.

Ruins, the fate of all cities.
