Cedar Creek Falls in Ramona, CA Now Closed To Hikers and Swimmers Until November

Cedar Creek Falls is a remote waterfall near Ramona, CA with its own plunge pool at the bottom that I've been wanting to hike to for a few years now. It's a popular summertime spot to jump into the plunge pool at the base of the falls, but the six-mile round-trip hike over very steep, rough backcountry tends to keep a large amount of people away. However, the US Forest Service has just closed the trail to the falls and the falls itself because a teenager was killed there last week when jumping off the rocks into the pool. He hit his head and died. Sherriffs will be issuing trespassing tickets to anyone on the trail or at the falls, and sherriffs will be posted at the trailhead and near the falls every day of the week to enforce the closure, according to the articles I've read. One such article is here:

Video of the Cedar Creek Falls is here:

Video of people swimming at the site is here:

Too bad this whole area is now off limits. Can't even enjoy a simple hike to a waterfall anymore.

Just did some rock jumping this weekend myself except what we were jumping off of was much much higher, about 80 feet or so. Its nothing to mess around with if you dont know what your doing. All it takes is to land wrong or miss a rock in your checking of the water and your gunna be broken up or in the case you mentioned dead. Its unfortunate what happened but its a reminder to people that things like this can happen if your not completely aware of whats in the water your jumping in.

It's a wonder we're still allowed to drive cars anymore, seeing as how it's so dangerous. Though...driving cars makes the state money, and hiking/diving does not.

Hence...driving, even though far more dangerous, is still perfectly fine.

LOVE the system. "Safety first...unless there's money involved."

I agree! One news article proposed hiring a lifeguard to be stationed at the remote waterfall and plunge pool. However, they said they don't have the budget to pay a lifeguard to be out there. It will be interesting to see what safety practices are put into place. Probably just more signage. Also one article said they would install a water fountain on the remote, rugged, rocky trail because a lot of people get dehydrated hiking out there.

How far we have fallen. What ever happened to "survival of the fittest"? The gene pool needs a lot more chlorine.

Vexx: You were hitting some 80 footers? Nice! Was this up at Little Grass Valley res? I'm heading up to the Yuba to jump cliffs and swim at the end of this month. I'm thinking about going up to the Feather River to jump and swim that same weekend, but would probably wear a wetsuit, PFD and helmet since there's some Class V rapids to contend with there. http://www.america...id/18179/size/big/
You want to join up? Got a 4 wheel?

This Cedar Creek falls thing really pisses me off. Tell me the guy didn't die jumping only 10' like that video showed. Somebody dies and therefore nobody else can go up there!!?? F**king bullshit. People need to learn to take care of themselves and be responsible for themselves. Installing a water fountain for thirsty hikers! oh boy. that is the wrong approach. how about leave people to their own instead of trying to govern every little corner of our land!
Everyday, our freedoms as U.S. Citizens are compromised a little more, and the land is a little bit less free.
Pissed off,

I'm pretty sure I ripped off those quotes from elsewhere. Feel free to attribute them as by anybody but me. Just seemed fitting. Go out in the middle of nowhere and jump off of rocks into a pool with rocks in it... just asking for injuries or worse. Spoiled it for others. I have no love for these type of people. Hopefully they didn't breed and we can give them a Darwin award.
