| | Remains of Camp Barkeley, SW of Abilene < on 6/30/2011 4:59 AM >
| | | So I do a lot of work on the OpenStreetMap, and I discovered that there were a bunch of roads in a highly unusual grid layout in the sticks outside of Abilene. After a little research, I discovered that I found the remnants of a fairly large WWII Army camp. Turns out it was over 70,000 acres and housed 50,000 soldiers at it's peak. It was even a POW camp with 800 or so Nazis! The land has all been returned back to the owners to which it was originally leased, and the vast majority of the infrastructure has been removed. You can get pretty close from the Bing maps birds eye view, but it seems like only building slabs and roads are left. Links galore below
The area drawn in OSM: http://osm.org/go/TtSqrHyw- A decent article on the Camp by Texas Escapes: http://www.texases.../Camp-Barkeley.htm
This is my very first thread, and I know it's not much, but hey, it's a start! -S in SA
