Death in our Midst

I hope this isn't one of our own .... has anyone heard?

DALLAS - Dallas police are investigating the early morning death of a 26-year-old man who they say fell 25 to 30 feet from the third floor of a downtown Dallas parking garage.

Police say the man and two friends had climbed to the top floor of the uncovered parking garage to take photos of the downtown Dallas skyline. They believe the man did not realize how close he was to the edge because the area is not well lit at the site located in the 2400 block of Victory Park Lane.

Police said he fell while taking photos, falling on his head as he landed down below on a hard cement surface.

I saw a breathing lump under a blanket, what could it be? - 1 hobo - 2 dwarf hobos - 8 racoons - 443 rats - 896 mice or 11 rat kings?

Yes, it's sad that he died, but the way they worded it, well, it made me laugh/wonder.

From the wording of the original post, it's quite possible that it's one of ours, though I am sure there are plenty of amateur photogs who like to take photos from odd places. Plenty of former UER members who still explore. Sad he made a fatal mistake and it cost him his life. Everyone should take note of just how dangerous our "hobby" can be. Keep you eyes open and be aware of your surroundings.
Above all, be safe. No picture is worth your life!

Fiftyone_eggs, I removed the post just simply out of respect for the topic and the people involved. I know you probably didn't mean anything by it, but still, just didn't seem appropriate for this context.

Thanks Raticus for removing that. They have released the name and it somewhat rang a bell from a while back but not sure. I wont post it here but if you go to the Dallas morning snooze or startlegram and search "garage fall" you will find it. This is a mistake thousands of people make while taking pictures everyday when you think about it. Who hasn't seen mom/dad/aunt/uncle/brother/sister backing up looking through a camera lens and stumble off of a patio, run into a tree limb etc... Americas Funniest Videos has been making money off it for years.

That said, the most important thing taking pictures in the environment of UE is always know your surroundings. NEVER walk around looking through your camera unless your damn sure you have flat open space around you. Back up, check in the camera, adjust, check again etc... Trip hazards, edges of walkways, edges roofs, holes in floors, crap hanging from ceilings, you wont see any of this looking in a camera.

Been doing this a long time and can only say the only thing you should be looking at if your walking backwards is over your shoulder! Stay safe out there!

Actually, those were NY plates and NY taxis.

Hey maybe if one of his friends ever buys it, someone will make some tasteless or moronic joke about them...

...assuming of course he has any friends

LOL, no, don't drag me down as the bad guy here. As I said in the pm I just sent you, I removed it for two reasons. First, because several people, including myself, thought it was not in good taste for this particular thread. Not every thread demands a shot of humor. And two, I told you that I removed it to keep this thread from becoming a shit fest. And I'm not going to fall into that trap now either.

So, thanks for NOT making the boards a happier and safer place for all of us, when the discussion is about another human dying while doing something we all enjoy.

Folks, it's not like I mocked the guy. I merely provided an amusing visual to compliment the absurdity of the article's wording. The dude was likely NOT taking photos as he fell (I would provide a link but I wouldn't want Raticus to have an aneurism).

Fuckin hell. Over and out.
