George Air Force Base

Went over to George Air Force Base last weekend. Like everyone has said here, it’s practically a tomb with no security in sight. Although it was nice change of pace to actually be able to just walk in without much worry, the lack of security has clearly taken a toll on these buildings.

Even so, it was still worth the trip to me. The newer style hospital definitely gave me a “Walking Dead” type vibe, which was pretty cool. The vault on the second floor was interesting too. Although its more than likely empty, I still found myself looking for any entry way. Apparently, not the only one.. The crowbar marks on the front, the broken plaster (Only showing another layer of brick on the sides.... Haha, people even tried to go in from the ceiling with no luck.

The pool/dump spot was a little disturbing (In a good way).. With all the toy baby dolls laying around.

The only people we ran into was a bunch of guys having an air soft gun war near the training area.

Glad you had a good trip and that my advice was good. Pretty cool to see your pics and be able to see how different people can go at different times and see a completely different place. Some pretty cool shots you got there. Think we might make it back down there soon just to hit up that other stuff I had mentioned to ya.

Yeah, it's a 2007 Solstice. I owe more money than it's worth, so you probably wouldn't want it. Haha.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Much appreciated.

I've got some waypoints saved in Google Earth around this place. I'd be down!

PS...anyone else wanna squat in one of these old townhomes and get a free house? It pisses me off to see old military housing like this that's long since been decommissioned not be handed over to some organization that could house homeless people or families in need. Super irresponsible and wasteful.

I'd say plan your trip more on the sooner than later side.......

Place was pretty trashed when we were there, no less exciting, but from photos and stories of not so long ago, its went down hill FAST. Im guess that once its started to get a little vandalized and scrapped that the powers that be just kinda backed away and left it to be destroyed.

"Homeless people or families in need" usually tend to require a lot more resources than simply shelter. By no means am I downplaying the importance of shelter itself -- I too have poked around dozens of old military housing areas around the country & been frustrated to see them just rotting away. However it's pretty ignorant to think the military/base conversion agency can just hand-over the houses & say "Here ya go!" These former military houses weren't built to commercial code, we're not providing any utilities like electricity, water or sewage, nor is there public transportation or operating schools in the immediate area, and the job market in Adelanto/Victorville isn't the best, but hey, beggars can't be choosers, and at least you have a roof over your heads!"

The military is required to make surplus land & real-property available to other federal, state & local agencies, but there's also a hell of a lot of other laws & red-tape that have to be dealt-with & the overall goal is to get the surplus property generating jobs & tax revenue ASAP.

The sad but understandable reality is that pretty much no one wants to have a homeless shelter near them/in their city, because such a facility eats up more than it's fair share of a community's resources. Adult chronic homelessness almost always involves substance-abuse problems, and psychological deficencies and you can't take-on the homeless challenge without addressing what are often some pretty severe underlying issues.

It would cost more to renovate and bring a place like that up to code, than to have a bunch of low income track housing built.

Part of why homeless people find abandonment's to live in and for the most part can stay for awhile. As long as owners know not that they are there, or at least can say they dont, then they are not responsible. Now if the owner says "sure this place is vacant, you can stay there" then they are responsible to make sure the place is up to code and they take on massive liability if anything were to happen. That leads into a whole nother rant about sue happy people making things hard for the rest...... but I wont go there lol

By the way, the best re-use of the former Victorville Army Air Field/George AFB so far is the US Bureau of Prisons Federal Correctional Complex Victorville.

It sits on what was once the "bomb dump" (munitions storage area) for the military base, dating back to the WW-II days when it was a bomber base.

The Cold War era weapons storage area, where missiles for the fighter aircraft were stored, was still intact, abandoned as-of my most recent visit.

I guess you have to put those people somewhere - but man, talk about pumping serious cash into a flawed system.

USP Victorville had cost about 102 million to build, designed for 960 inmates. It currently houses 1,642 inmates.

Each inmate costs the state/taxpayers approximately $47,500 (in '08-'09 dollars) per year (lao.ca.gov). Since 2000, this cost has gone up an average of about $2,500 per year (same source - CA gov website). So that would be closer to $55,000 per person per year.

$55,000 * 1,642 = $90,310,000 per year to pay for just the inmates in USP Victorville, which does NOT include the other 2 medium security facilities on site (FCI Victorville 1 and 2).

EDIT: Found the numbers for FCI 1&2...(bop.gov weekly population report):

VICTORVILLE MED I FCI CA 1,686
VICTORVILLE MED II FCI CA 1,713
VICTORVILLE MED II-CAMP CA 298
VICTORVILLE USP CA 1,672

http://www.bop.gov.../weekly_report.jsp

Cost for the State of California per year, to house these inmates in Victorville alone?

A mind-blowing $295,295,000 per year.

You honestly think all other options for that property would be more expensive? Or that people would rather have a Federal Penitentiary in their neighborhood than a senior center? lol. No. Not by a long shot.

Then again, it IS Victorville. They probably don't even notice.
