well got my israeli m15 military gas mask in the mail today with a nato filter. filter was made in 88 though . but i wanted to ask any of these gas masks with new or old filters good for urban exploration in environments with asbestos and all the other fun stuff? Also the old filters up to filtering asbestos?

asbestos wont hurt you unless you inhale it from its source or go to said abandonment multiple times for years for extended periods. a plus side is it makes your lungs fireproof.

i cant imagine gas masks being needed unless you know the methane levels, say in a sewer, are dangerous. or if you know a certain place has a danger leak. but other than that a simple respirator or paint mask will work.

i carry both \jic/

if you happen to have a stemapunk GM then yes wear it and take many a self portrait.

A simple paint mask is useless with asbestos.

P100 is what you need.

methane is mostly dangerous because it is explosive and could displace oxygen. a gas mask will do nothing for you. A respirator does not provide you with good air, it simply filters out certain things, this makes respirators and gas masks largely useless in a drain. Do yourself a favor and search for respirator on here, there have been a multitude of threads discussing their use.

I was actually discussing asbestos over beer with a friend yesterday. He's working as a construction site manager for an abatement company here in milwaukee. I discussed how short term, non-daily exposure (aka exploring) wasn't a real hazard and he generally agreed with me. He also told me that the shortest exposure that ever resulted in mesothelioma was about a month spent in 8-10 hour work days in extreme asbestos environment (mining or spraying it) without mask.

The likelihood of health risks from asbestos exposure while exploring is minimal.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

if you're worried about asbestos and mold and etc, drop around 27-35$ on a P100 respirator, i've got one for work dealing with lead shavings and saw dust, and bird droppings, works well for that and is rated for asbestos and poisonous mold spores.

gas masks are just excessive, although it'd make great conversation for the security that may spot you

respirator

oh the seal is great, long as you wear it right and keep it cinched tight, i haven't had an issue with mine at all in all the environments that i wear it in, just replace the filters frequently an you should be fine

if you've had training, then you can answer that question yourself.

gasmasks are cumbersome and hinder KEY points of view... ESPECIALLY when walking through a rather precarious abandonment. also, if you were 'trained' you would know that charcoal filters have a short shelf life once opened. no, your mask's filter will do nothing but stop dust from entering the mask.

in this day and age of over zealous cops and 'homeland security', the LAST thing i would want on my head whilst trespassing somewhere is an israeli gasmask.

+1

i don't know about you but if caught with a gas mask, it's pretty damn tough to explain that away

but yes, you can do a seal check by covering up the filters and trying to breathe in, i you still can it's not tight enough.

i have to routinely wear gas masks at my job (Chlorine Dioxide, Hydrogen Sulfide gas) and to be honest, they suck to wear. Especially in hot, humid weather. They also fog up pretty badly if you're really exerting yourself which can be a hazard unto itself. We use these things, the Scott O-Vista mask:
