| | Wingate, Texas < on 6/17/2011 6:40 AM >
| | | When I was living in Boulder,CO last year, my girlfriend and I decided to take a trip to Austin to escape Winter. Texas being Texas, I knew we'd see many ghost towns on the way, and I was right. We were on a tight schedule, so I unfortunately was not able to explore these towns as extensively as I would have liked too. I had to explore at least one though. So when we came up on a good one I pulled over, parked my car behind an abandoned bank, and started doing my thing. The town is called Wingate, Texas: http://maps.google...&aq=&sll=32.039112,-100.111005&sspn=0.014533,0.027874&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Wingate,+Winters,+Runnels,+Texas&t=h&layer=c&cb ll=32.043662,-100.110112&panoid=WlI06jIka_L0odi3knQudg&cbp=11,48.05,,0,-1.38&ll=32.044646,-100.108001 &spn=0.001641,0.006968&z=18 The town was still partially inhabited. There were some outlying homes that clearly had people living in them. But as far as I could tell this whole section of the town was uninhabited. I was wrong.

As I was walking around in the "Cafe" I kept seeing cups and bowls lying around next to dirty blankets which unsettled me. I get to the kitchen area of the Cafe, and on the metal counter is a bowl with a few cheerios floating in white liquid milk. Someone had clearly been here recently and ate that bowl of cheerios. At this point I got a little spooked and stopped taking pictures. I mean who could be living here? While I was standing in the kitchen, I noticed that in a backroom behind the counter there was a room that had plastic milk and soda jugs, as well bottles of cleaning solution. I could see some of the jugs were filled with clear and yellow liquid. Probably meth related, so I got my ass out of there. As I walked to my car, I heard a screeching noise that was getting louder and louder. I look towards the noise and I see a truck (obviously with some engine problems because the thing was screeching like a banshee) slowly making it's way towards my car with my GF waiting inside of it. This was no ordinary truck. Instead of a fender, it had one side of a baby cradle attached to it. YES, A BABY CRADLE. I knew I'd live to see the world of Mad Max come true, but I thought that was supposed to be after peak oil. I pick up my pace and get to my car before the truck. As I'm opening the door to my car, the truck sloooowly passes by us in the parking lot. I couldn't really make out the driver because his driver side window was shattered and being held in place by duck tape. We figured the locals must not want us there poking around their meth labs, so we left. I'd like to visit the place again though. I'll contact ya'll next time I'm there. | | | Thanks, should be fixed now. Yeah, the poverty inside of our own country is sad. And then add meth onto the top of it and it's just a nightmare. That stuff literally turns you into a zombie. Meth is the closest thing humans have to the T-virus. [last edit 6/17/2011 7:19 AM by SpaceJazz - edited 3 times]

| | | wingate could have some meth production going on but i would suspect it is being sold up in abilene. wingate is a fun place to shoot and ive never had any problems whatsoever out there. im assuming since there arent any photos of it that you did not find the school? its photographic gold. i was actually planning a trip out there tomorrow or next weekend. there are 2 other schools in the area that i know of and a couple that are 'iffy' at best.

| | | this is the back side of the wingate school. the gym is to the left of the main building. no spray paint crap anywhere inside or out. though there is a LARGE pile of computers and pill bottles out front. must have been fun to eat pills and learn windows95.

| | | i went to wingate yesterday - the school is just waiting for someone to go inside. i found 2 points of entry - actually many points but they involved climbing in windows and i was not in the mood given that it was 111 in the shade (no lie) and i was near heat exhaustion by the time i got there. more to come - didnt want to snipe your thread too many times!

SpaceJazz, on one of his trips, he only opened the Texas Door half way. That's how he found half a meth lab. You see, if you only open the Texas Door halfway, you only get half the exposure to the Platholithumistic particles that you would normally get, thereby rendering half a meth lab. It's simple.

| | | Thanks so much for the tip about Wingate. Got to go over there yesterday and check out the school. I was not able to get into the main school building because the person I was with was VERY uncomfortable being there for some reason, but did go into the basketball auditorium, which was super-cool. Got some great shots which I'll post later tonight. Thanks!!

| | | Sorry I didn't get these posted last night. Here's the best of the shots, if they can be called "best..." 1. Front of the school
2. Right side entrance to the school
3. Gymnasium floor
4. Gymnasium bleachers
5. Gymnasium ceiling
6. Obligatory toilet shot- bonus trophy man clawing his way there
7. Obligatory bathroom shot
8. One of the school rooms
9. Might want to put "dusting" on the top of the priority list...
10. Thank God there's a manual for it.
11. Left side entrance to the school

| | | nice! ill be returning in two weeks or so - found another 2 schools north of wingate that need to be photographed as well...
the trophy man was crawling OUT of the obligatory toilet shot when i was there! haha.
when i made it up to abilene after leaving wingate i got caught in a tornado (no shit) and after it was all said and done, i looked to my right and no more than 30 feet from my car i saw this..
and i also started my own dirt business while i was out west
