Well, some of you that are blessed enough to be full members saw the thread I posted about the new house I moved into, and how my backyard is literally one of the biggest, longest, tallest drains I've ever seen in Denton. For recap: here are two before shots:

(yes that's literally what my back door opens to)

Anyway, Monday I was so very rudely awoken at 8 am (I work nights so I was pissed) by the sounds of heavy machinery and spanish and I knew a construction firm was doing SOMETHING very close by... Went outside to blaze and saw this (it's taken from the exact same point and angle as the above picture)

Apparently, the city changing the open drainage canal into an enclosed tunnel much like the rest of the system, probably so they can build a business on top of it. I waited until today and promptly at 5pm the workers packed up and went home, so I grabbed my camera and my roommate and we went and got a very unique glimpse of 'reverse draining'... or the birth of a drain, if you may.

I can imply that yes, we did do some mini-crane climbing, and I can also imply that the dumb workers just left the keys in the crane, and furthermore that the cranes are remarkably simple and intuitive to start up, and also I can assure you that local law enforcement WILL notice if an empty crane randomly fires up, but it sometimes works out to be okay because the cop thinks it's funny as shit when he finds you curled up in a backhoe's bucket.

From the looks of things, you guys had a pretty epic day.
I'm interested to see how they proceed from here. I have always wondered how they would pour the concrete ceiling of the drain. Would they build some support structure inside? And somehow get it out again?
Well, congrats on your new drain.

From what I understand from the local drains I've seen, and watching them build this one, they're going to build a metal cage out of re-bar, then strap plywood to the inside of the cage and seal it with pitch or tar, then strap plywood to the outside of the cage, leaving the top open, and this makes a lovely drain mold, and they pour concrete over the re-bar and and encase it concrete.

We got to do that one time here when they were building the largest culvert ever built in Oklahoma. Not so much a culvert, it is 2 miles long, but that's what they call it.

Here's a couple pics, hope you don't mind..

Major engineering mistake. They had to tear down almost 100 feet of 16 ft tall drain x 3.

Don't worry, we tag our drains up here. Nothing else though.

Thanks for letting me hijack.. If you're upset, I will give you a ride to the drain party up here next weekend and back for free. lol.

(I'm serious about that ride though. We can blaze the whole way, and I'm coming down there anyway to pick up Ardamass and Bacon.)

Drains, drains, drains, drains, drains.
