| | | | I normally carry a Police size pepper spray. It's not a lethal weapon and would afford the few seconds of distraction to accomplish my escape as I can run even at my age.
But thats worst case scenario. I try to listen and watch for potential danger (even tho it can find you no matter how hard you watch). Being as stealthy as you can, looking like you are supposed to be there or say, as a homeless person, no one gives you a second look or may even avoid you. Really only works for more mature explorers (me, 2X, Raticus, and anyone else over 30) Plus, my big 4 C cell flashlight makes a nifty club, prod or at least helps keep them out of arms reach.
Exploring tends to take us places that could be construed as trespassing or some other criminal mischief, so I figure its best to not temp fate should Five-O show up. nowutImean?

this works for us only because:
a. we usually look like we dont have anything worth mugging us for
b. we look like we are deadly weapons and the bad guys usually haul ass when we show up
c. you left Kooda out of this line up SS, hes more scarrier than the rest of the over-the-hill gang even when hes not heeled
d. it makes it kinda hard to crawl under fences when you have a camera and stuff but I usually carry one of these on a single point sling around the back like this guy:

while yeah, it can make a serious charge out of a warning, the times I have carried and run into the police, they haven't cared. It really deals with where you are in the US. here in fort worth, the times I've encountered police while carrying and exploring, the cops were more interested in checking my gun out and asking questions about it and asking if I wanted to go to the range with them so they could shoot it. thats what I get for carrying a Colt Delta Elite Gold Cup National Match though. It really all depends on the cops in your city and how you handle them. I've never actually had reason to slap leather while exploring, and of the times I have had to draw down on a threat, I've only discharged the weapon once. That was on a doberman who had escaped his yard and was intent upon using me as a chew toy. every other time the gun has come out it has resulted in a flurry of 'its cool man, its cool' and running away. well, there was that one time when a thuglet wet himself, but he ran away after that. the moral is, if your cops are level headed, fair and laid back; if you treat them with respect and dont lie to them and you are legal, they usually don't care. There are a lot of ifs there so unless you are sure of the answers on all the ifs, dont carry.

yeah, but hell, once you've embedded in Afghanistan and Colombia, there just isnt a whole lot you can't handle stateside if you remain vigilant. especially in an abandonment. stealth and most abandonments in the southwest are mutually exclusive concepts. situational awareness and a little opsec go a lot farther than a steel security blanket.
