| | | Going off my own interactions with all manner of people, I'd say it really depends on the person. You've probably got a couple of seconds to both get a feel for them by their body language, dress, expression, and voice if they're saying something. The cigarette idea is choice. If that doesn't appease them, and they're drunk, I imagine throwing it at them and kneeing them somewhere in the torso will work, too. ...half joking and half serious on that last paragraph.

| | | Scrappers (the good kind, anyway) have their own set of unofficial rules to go by. I know very, very few who will break into places to get some metal. Most have permission to be where they are, and if not, they most likely won't be violent or anything like that. Many are hard workers who are unemployed, and they are just people looking to make a few extra bucks. Some of them are also just environmentally-concerned and like to see things get recycled, especially if they can make some money off it And, like someone else here said, just tell them that you aren't there to rat them out as long as they return the favor.

| | | The "good kind of scrappers" I know are known as demolition workers, and they do much more than just take the valuable metals.

| | | Last place I went where we ran into scrappers, they were practically salivating over their findings, so we figured we'd leave them be. Next time we went to that location they had punched a couple holes into places we didn't really know existed, so that was interesting to see that there were rooms we didn't know were in there. However, over-scrapping and punching down lots of walls could be like playing Jenga if scrappers aren't careful (and most of them are pretty dim).
We're all just trapped between the stippled earth and the stubbled sky. |

Don't. Call the police, tag & bag them. They destroy sites and make them more dangerous. [last edit 3/25/2012 2:30 PM by MrSivalls - edited 1 times]

I've had scrappers arrested and prosecuted. Pictures make good evidence. Maybe that's too much for some to absorb why it helps to preserve structures.

Then all the entrances to the building get sealed so no one else can get in.

|
Depends on the place. You dont want one of the best places in the area sealed because you ratted out a scrapper. If its some shitty mill or warehouse who cares. But if its one of the best power plants on the East Coast, getting it sealed isnt the best idea and will piss off a lot of people.

Scrappers get power plants sealed as do dumb asses that get caught. Any person in those plants is a liability to the owner. Scrappers leave graphic evidence of their visit that are hard to ignore. At demo time their pilfering make demos more expensive because all the valuable metals have been stolen. I've gotten to revisit, with permission or real time advise, the sites where I help tagged scrappers for that courtesy. Knowing what the owners and the police are looking for is a valuable asset, scrappers are not.

So I'm walking through the best power plant on the east coast. I see a team of scrappers gutting it. I ignore them because I'm afraid of impacting the future trips of others to the shittiest, wall-less, gutted power plants to on the east coast? If scrappers or vandals destroy the best power plant, it's not gonna be the best anymore, and it'll only get worse if it isn't sealed anyway by the owner who's pissed his building's been destroyed from the inside out. I'll take my chances pissing people off.

They're not all marked for demolition. Just as often, the building is set for future renovation. When the scrappers destroy them for their plumbing and wiring, they don't get renovated at all, they end up demolished because they're no longer worth saving.
