I'm planning a trip to a hospital in a very urban environment. I know a POE, but due to the heavy traffic around the site, my normal UE pack won't do. The hospital is very dark and full of mold. What items should I bring or not bring?

Are you heading there day or night?
If night, I would suggest a lantern rather than a high-power maglite which could draw attention.

Is that snow or asbestos?

Bring a decent filter mask for the mold, some gloves, wear boots, and of course, a flashlight. All of this can be transported fairly inconspicuously.

The urban area and heavy traffic increases the chance of someone seeing you go in and having the police called on you. If the police stop you and you have property on you that was removed from the building you're going to be arrested for breaking and entering and theft.

Sounds good. Does anyone know the legalities of taking old patient records?

yeah, stealing stuff that isnt yours in general is generally regarded as theft. I dont know the specifics of stealing hospital records, but you might run afoul of HIPPA rules, or maybe even get tagged for some sort of identity theft. I dont know, Im not a lawyer or a thief. Bottom line? Stealing things=illegal. Announcing your intent to do so on a PUBLIC internet forum=downright boneheaded. If you have to ask about the legality of theft, maybe you should reconsider your plan to trespass.

What about taking photos of the records instead, to look at later? Would that be an acceptable, LEGAL, option?

Isn't anything that prevents you from taking pictures of anything. Honestly if someone is going to pursue a HIPAA suit it would be against the hospital who failed to properly destroy their confidential records and not the photographer who took a picture, use your discretion, generally once the person dies HIPAA protection ends, you have a record of an 80 yr old patient from 1956, you're probably ok.

Then again HIPAA was enacted in 1996, so if the place was abandoned before then, no guarantees on the destruction. Grandfathered in? No clue. It pisses me off to see patient records still strewn about in places that closed in the last decade.

Die, camera scum! If you want to copy records, just bring some silly putty. They don't want to arrest a guy armed with silly putty.

Where'd my oh there it is go?...damn.

When it comes to posting something like this online, you could also consider blurring important details, such as names.

Real simple, bring water, a good flashlight or two, and a camera is optional. Short term exposure to mold wont kill ya.

My weakness is that I always feel the need to explore every inch of a location, but that also increases the risk of being caught because I'm inside for so long. Any ideas for a plan of action once I'm inside?

Keep low, away from windows, don't make lots of noise, listen.
Common sense stuff really.

How long is "so long?" I'm a get in, get the shot, get out type, but in large locations I still wind up staying up to 2 hours even when I explore at a fast pace. I just stay aware of my surroundings and try not to make too much noise or linger in areas where I can be seen.

quickly and quietly find a staircase, and head for the top floor, poking your head in every floor on the way up to look for signs of recent activity. Get to the top floor (or roof if it's night) and carefully watch outside for 5-30 minutes to make sure the police don't show up while you're there (time dependent on location / activity / number of people etc.). Once you feel that you likely weren't spotted, start explore all the floors going down the stairs to your desire, occasionally checking the windows just to make sure no one shows up while your guard is down.

And try to be just as careful coming out as you were going in--- you're likely to not get in trouble if a nosy neighbor spots you, but you may instigate neighbors to be quicker to make a phone call to the police and end up causing a hassle for the next explore who goes there!

Also, if the police do show up, you ought to go to the roof/top floor, preferably as far from the stairwell as possible, until they either find you or leave. If they find you, claim you couldn't hear them, for you were shooting photos up there for a while. If they don't... go back to exploring

but on the original post... only things you *really* ought to have are decent footwear and a dependable light. But even those aren't required, so long as you have a sense of adventure.

All the rest is accessory, and all depends on what you're interested in. If it's memories of your invasion-penetration, bring a point & shoot camera. If it's photography, bring a nice camera and a tripod. If it's graffiti, bring a few cans of contrasting colors, a decent particular filter, and some latex gloves. If it's kinky UE sex, make sure you bring gas masks, plenty of lube and an inflatable girl (or cow, if you're into that, because we have no biases here). Drugs, prostitution, arson, hobo bludgeoning (maglites), just bring only the things you'll need, and no more. And beer. Beer is always good to bring exploring.

Get the idea?
