Route 66

I have hovered here for quite some time. This is my first post so I hope you guys like it.

I have done some recent time in NM along the famed Route 66. These are some shots I took on my adventures. BTW I took one of my daughters on her first ur-rurbex excursions. Matter of fact she even selected the building. It was wide open access with zero harassment. I plan to do the Route 66 trip all the way back to the Chicago area and then home to WI.

That beer bottle collection is really cool. I'm really surprised that no one has smashed it all down yet.

Very cool shots, I really dig ol' 66. I covered it from Ariz border to Victorville, it was a blast.

Love the '62/63? Chev.

I live off of Route 66 here in Oklahoma. Always wanted to just take off down the road and see where it takes me. I've only taken it as far as the Hard Rock Casino which is like 4 miles from my house. Maybe I should get after it some time.

Nice pics, but I would stay away from the HDR. MHO.

Agreed, overdone for my tastes.

Great first post, though don't forget to number/title your images so we can refer to them specifically! For example, I like the B/W of the couch through the doorway and of the bookcase cluttered with things.

I'd leave the HDR to image subjects that don't already have appeal.

I like. Watch out for the hdr hater bandwagon, it'll run you over.

The image was just one I got lucky on. I took about 6 images and this was the best. The key I think is looking at the image in the view finder and asking myself how I would go about improving it, so I can save work and crop time. I HATE cropping images. The HDR part was done in Photomatix ( 1 exposure turned into 3 and then merged). I started with the grudge setting and went from there.

For the HDR haters, you have to admit the image at hand (car in station) is well done and it lends itself to the effect. I have already sold prints for it and have yet to go home. Leaving on the 3rd for WI.

EVERYONE loves a good location. OK, ok - in NM head east on 40 from ABQ and think Tequila. I would say dont drive too fast or you will miss it and have to back up the on ramp like I did. There is basically a complete town that is no longer on the map so to speak and it is for sale. One could spend many hours there with open access and ZERO harassment. This location is one of the many towns that have died on route 66. Last hint - it is on the south side of the HWY. Noobs - DO NOT screw up this location as it is one of the best locations I have seen yet.

Last but not least - I WILL remember to give images a reference number so comments are more easily understood in the thread. Watch this thread as I will add more images as time allows. I have loads of images from this ghost town off 40 (think 1940s and the hills have eyes).

- Lets call this image 10 as I have no idea how many others I have posted so far.

Nice pics. Hate the watermark. Since you're posting them here on a public forum at a small size, why bother stamping them? It really detracts from the image. (Just my opinion.)

Great photos!

To KingJalopy (the poster pondering a trip to R66), would definitely try to get one of those history/info maps. I don't know where to source them - was lent by a friend's dad who was planning a trip himself. There are a lot of interesting things right off R66 that aren't very obvious, such as OK's first oil well. Also, these guides are great for explaining where the original "alignments" are, which you'd never figure out just following R66 on your GPS.

My one other tip: Don't go it alone. I got pretty stir crazy after 3 days on the road hoping from place to play without any company.

I've been really wanting to do a Route 66 roadtrip for the last 5 or 6 years now, preferably sooner, as it only deteriorates more and more each year.

http://www.route66...rsity.com/maps.php

here's some PDF maps. I guess that about 80% of the historic road (but then again there's multiple versions) are still drivable, so it's not COMPLETELY gone.

I just wonder if it will fade completely into obscurity, or if sections will be rebuilt up more for tourists and stuff.

I think some of the HDR stuff looks really awesome, especially the some of the color images with good contrast and detectable depth of view.

The HDR kills my eyes when it's in black and white and depth disappears. It becomes something of a magic eye picture at that point, but with no hidden 3D object.

But still, some of those beginning photos, the color shots, in HDR look really really awesome.

Actually, after a second look I can see that it isn't necessarily the color vs. black & white that effects my HDR experience. So to be more specific...

Photos 1, 2, and 3 with the HDR look stunning and I like them a lot.

Photos 4 and 5 really hurt my eyes and I think the HDR hurts those.

So yeah, it's all give and take. I don't hate HDR at all. I've seen some pictures that really knock my socks off with the technique. The first photo in this set especially kicks ass.
