Help/ideas/tips for a relativley unexplored site.

As some of you know there is a ICBM missile site that has a supposedly underground system 3 to 6 stories deep. I have been to the site, found the tunnel that goes straight down, and studied it. My plan is to enter and explore the underground system but I would like any safety or heads up type tips you guys could come up with. I feel my upper body strength is sufficient to go down and pull my self back out by rope but were going to use a rope ladder. I have already read the articles on masks, airborne toxins, and gasses. I'm going to assume the worst(asbestos, gasses, and the like) I'm also going to assume that it's unstable since there is rumor of the lower floors purposely being imploded. My safety is going to be the following; an asbestos rated filter on a half face respirator from a hardware store, chem gloves, and keeping in contact with a team member on the top. Is this enough? Thanks for you help.

You should really try to borrow or buy some actual rappelling gear for this. It doesn't take long at all to learn the basics if you have someone knowledge demonstrate them. Rope ladders can be untrustworthy. How long is the drop?

Yeah, what Aurelie said - there are a bunch of people on here who get all excited about climbing gear and dream of being asked for advice

Also be aware of bad air. A pocket sized air sniffer may keep you alive. You can't smell lack of oxygen.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

Just have your blackhawk hover above the hole and lower you down via winch.

Its also safer if you go by yourself and dont tell anybody youre going. Leaving a buddy on top of the missile silo could possibly attract the FBI. You dont need them giving you a hard time.

If something doesn't feel right or safe listen to your gut and don't push the issue. Be prepared to make it only part way down, run into an issue and go back up to figure out a solution and come back a different day if need be. Expect everything to take 3 times longer than your worst case time frame. Also bring several sources of light.

The obvious, bring a camera - we really want to see!

But seriously be careful, especially with the floors being purposely imploded it could make other things unstable, even if they look stable.

Also try to plan another exit strategy - there has to be more than just one way into this place right? I am sure its locked up tighter than a nuns... well just locked up tight but at least you tried!

>rope ladder<

count the rungs

Also, not knowing how deep the hole is, and using something that could be too short can lead to some frustrating situations, and in those frustrating situations you can make mistakes, like saying "aww thats close enough i'll just jump it".

Then your at the bottom of a hole with the rope ladder 1 foot above your highest jump and your buddy up top cant find a good way to get it lower. You find a chunk of concrete to boost with eventually but those couple minutes of panic stick with you.

Just saying

It's not the smokes makin' me sick, It's standing out in the cold to smoke em'

Sorry for not saying this before. I've been climbing for over 6 years now and have no problem with rappelling. My Grandfather is an ex Marine Colonel. He had me certified with the force recon guys. The reason for a rope ladder is I would like an easy and fast way out if we run into trouble. Also Yates tactical gear makes ladders rated to 3000 lbs per step with a total of 10,000 lbs. I would feel fine with those standards. I'm also going to get a laser distance measure so there shouldn't be any gaps between the ladder and the floor.

Thanks for all the advice and I'll definitely get some pics for you guys.

As for PLAYED since it's on a military base it's a no fly zone for the F.B.I's helicopters:p and I'll watch out for the baddies.

I wouldn't even consider entering a place like you're describing without one.
