Hopping Fences, Riding Bikes

Found a new location today. It's remote, as in no other buildings in eyeshot, although the road is traveled frequently as a shortcut. But it's got new cattle fencing with barbed wire on top as far as the eye can see, with a home on the open end and the other disappearing into the woods, so no chance of walking around it. I'm not too worried about the actual scaling of the fence. I'm mildly concerned about how much more trouble I could get into in the extremely rare chance I get stopped by authorities. There's a big difference, to me, between walking in through an open door or gate and climbing over a barbed wire fence. Would it still be considered just trespassing, or something more?

I'm also going to have to ride my bike to this location as there is nowhere I can park near it. I'm not sure if the foliage is thick enough for me to hide it sufficiently in a ditch. But I don't want to wait for it to get any thicker because the house is already halfway obscured with greenery. How do you make a riderless bike look casual on the side of a remote country road? Since there is nothing else around, anything other than total camouflage would stick out like a sore thumb.

If its not too far of a walk I would leave the bike @ home seeing as you don't think you'll be able to adequately hide it.

...on the other hand it sounds like you are over-thinking and psyching yourself out.

Going in a group?

Pretty sure it just considered trespassing unless you cut through the fence to get it i think then it would be considered breaking and entering. Im not sure though.

And with the bike, could you hide it around the back of the property? No one would see it there, unless they were specifically looking for it.

It'd be a long walk. If the weather is not too hot on the day I go, it might not be too bad, though.

I can't stash my bike around the back of the building because I'm not strong enough to lift it over a five foot fence.

Climbing a fence is the same offense as disobeying a No Trespassing sign. They made it clear that you weren't supposed to be there, you went in anyway, same crime.

Cutting or damaging the fence, though, can be considered breaking and entering in some places.

I think my plan of attack would be to toss my bike over the fence and bring it into the location with me.... maybe bring a blanket/mat with you in a backpack to throw over the fence if you are worried about the barbs messing up your bike.

If it is as remote as you make it sound like, I doubt you would have much to worry about. Or maybe going around the fence on the woods side and using the cover of the woods to get around the fence is the best idea.... hard to say without seeing it.

yeah, I don't plan on cutting the fence. A friend suggested I use wire cutters and make myself a little doorway. If I got caught with wire cutters my offense goes from a misdemeanor to a felony...no thanks.

I might try to stake out the place some more and see if I can find where the fence ends. On that side of the house it is really dense woods, I don't know if I could even work my way through it without making a ton of noise. Definitely not with a bike in tow.

If there's no other buildings in eyeshot, the noise you would make moving through the woods would definitely be a non-issue.

I know this might be a lame suggestion... but it might not even be a bad idea to knock on the door of that house and just ask for permission... unless it's obvious it's a crazy asshole redneck in which case maybe you should avoid it all together lol...

I've been shot at by a farmer when I was just walking across his field because he thought I was stealing cherries from his trees... country folk can either be the biggest assholes ever or cool with it

It's not entirely lame. It is an option. I guess I take a gamble either way. Ask, get told no, and never get photos at all because they start watching the place knowing that someone is interested in it. Don't ask, get caught, get in trouble (maybe). Or either one could turn out positive (get permission, or don't get caught). I love the unpredictability. And so far I'm batting 0 for 2 in the asking permission department.

I'll just have to keep brainstorming this one. I've never had a fence to contend with, or had to park elsewhere. I always just park in front and walk in the door like a boss. Never had to do anything more complex. I'm spoiled.

Pics or it didn't happen.

IMO this type of attitude will cause more trouble, more problems, and lead to either an arrest or citation.

@barefoot, I would knock on the door and ask for permission, tell the owner you are doing a photography project for school and would love to see the property b/c it caught your eye. I wouldn't go alone up to the door though, bring a friend.

this.. going under fences works quite well, that is if they aren't barred down =)

I'm going for casual here...riding a bike with a shovel over my shoulder ain't exactly casual. ;)

Theoretically, asking the people in the house nearby might work...however the building looks fairly dilapidated and I doubt they'd let me go inside out of fear that I'd get hurt and sue their asses off. If I can't go inside after asking permission I might as well not do it at all.

So here's the plan:

- Bring a back pack with all of your normal UE stuff in it, but most importantly buy a small folding camp shovel for like $12.83 from Walmart.
- Wear clothes you're not afraid to get dirty in (probably your UE clothes anyways).
- Ride your bike to a nearby location that is safe, stash the bike somewhere in the bushes or locked against a tree, sign post, etc.
- Walk up to the location, casually look around like you've never been there.
- Find the place in the fence that is least visible, preferably near a tree or bush.
- Dig a hole large enough to crawl through.
- Crawl through the hole.
- Profit.

Okay, after doing some more thorough Google Mapping, I think the house nearby is not actually on the same property. The fence goes all the way around a huge patch of woods, and it isn't actually open on their side from what I can tell. There is a lane going up one side of the woods with a few houses but I can't get street view so I can't tell where the fence ends. However, it seems there is some kind of pathway going from the far corner of the woods, over, down, over again, and down again in behind the house. So if I can find the end of the fence, I could possibly find my way through the woods to the house without much hassle.

It's funny how this stupid fence is psyching me out. I've never been worried about being seen at an abandonment before, ever. Many of the ones I've visited are right on busy highways and I never felt the slightest bit nervous. However, they were all wide open. If I get spotted inside a fenced area it's going to be fairly obvious I shouldn't be there.

EDIT: I'm not digging a hole. I can climb over the fence easily. I just would rather not have to do anything with the fence at all if I can, for trespassing purposes.

EDITx2: My point is, if I can access the house without ever having to deal with the fence, i.e. finding where it ends and just going around it, I can play it off much easier than if I just climb over it. "Oh, I was taking a walk and I saw a rare yellow-headed blue-bellied warbler, and wanted to take its photo, but it flew off into the woods and I followed it, and next thing I knew I had discovered this cool-looking building and thought I'd take a look at it. Fence? What fence? Why no, I'd never climb over a barbed wire fence, that's dangerous, officer."
