Yeah, I would have focused on an interesting part of the picture and used a large aperture (1.8. 2.8) and blurred the background. THere's almost too much going on to really catch your eye.

I agree with above statements. Maybe get in closer, focus on that hat cause it's a cool little detail and get rid of the stairs and distracting junk around the machine.

I agree with all above.

Plus, you can set the scene a little.

Open both the doors, move the hard hat, etc, make it interesting.

And yes, narrow the DOF.

The stairs on the left. They are very bright and in focus. They draw your eye from the boiler off to the left of the shot, which removes you from the subject. It should either be darker than the subject, or not in focus. OR you could tale a step back, include the stirs in the subject, and use the blurring of being out of focus or darkening to keep this new bigger subject the center of attention, since at that point the catwalk on the left and teh wall on the right will be drawing attention =D

Not bad. Using a tight aperture will make it sharp, which it is. It looks like you lost some detail in uploading/resizing

It's nice and level, but I'd make the composition moer interesting. Also, if you are going to use a watermark, make it more subtle

Thanks!

Yes, there is a difference in image quality from how the image sits on my desktop vs. how it appears on here. Composition was tricky with the lens I was using vs what little space was available to maneuver in. I took a shot @ 10mm but it introduces a whole new layer of distractions and distortion that I really didn't like on the shot.

For the other comments regarding DoF, it's really hard to control that at a wide angle with something more than 5 feet away. Even if the lens had an aperture of 2.8 it still would have a rather large field at about 13 feet. So unless I blurred in post, the shot is what it is.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Agreed,

And for those that think EDITING in a blur is a good idea, it's not! It looks stupid, I am not going to get into examples I have seen lately, but seeing one small focal point on an object and then using PS to blur the SHIT out of the rest of the pic is stupid. In fact it makes me nauseated to LOOK at so much blur!

exposure is right on, i think whats killing this is how close you are, if you stepped back and had all of the stairs on the left included, this would probably look better.

Re-done in all it's post processed glory...

Background blurred, background exposure decreased and lighting adjusted for focal point. For me this picture now presents an over-processed, underexposed un-natural looking image. No thanks!

Agreed! What spoils that shot is the 1.5' section of wall that juts out in front of the stairs. If I could have got between that small section of wall and the stairs and still got the whole Boiler I definitely would have walked away with a shot exactly like what you mentioned. Thanks for your feedback!

The only thing I ask myself is, Why did you take this picture? Just seems documentary to me.

Maybe a different angle (or farther away, already been said) ? I dunno just a boring piece of equipment in a factory.

And isn't the whole point of photography to DOCUMENT things? While the storyline of this particular photograph may not cover a lot of detail, I worked with what I had at the time. Anyone offering an educated critique would have read what I previously posted and taken that into consideration.

For info on how to critique like you have two brain cells to rub together;

I find it funny how THREE people out of the entire UER community responded to this. Knowing that and seeing what kind of feedback is given for Critiques really puts a lot of users into perspective around here.

Which is why I know think of the UER Forums as Romper Room.

Selective DOF in post processing is tacky, and it especially doesn't work well when you are blurring out things that are on the same point of the focal plane as what you are keeping in focus. Kevin is right, having the stairs cut off is majorly distracting. It should be either tighter for detail or wider for sense of scale and context.

That was his point to begin with from what I can see... The only reason he DID the post process BLUR was to shut the morons up that don't get that you can't get the kind of DoF they were looking for with the 10-20mm, and seem to think Bluring out the ass is cool from things like a Lens baby!

Precisely why I don't put much of my stuff here. I'm lucky that I get real critiques in a class room environment and sometimes certain Flickr groups can be helpful. Here it seems like most people care more about saying what they think will make them sound cool to their special little group of friends. After what I've been reading lately, I think I'm about ready to give up on this section of UER all together. It seems to be a giant waste of time. Sad.

Sorry guy, didn't mean to rustle your jimmies.

Just skimming through your Flickr and seen this:
http://www.flickr....313/in/photostream

Much better angle of that same piece of equipment, you condensed the scene and came out with a much better shot. Gave us less to look at.

For info on how to critique like you have two brain cells to rub together

Don't take things so personal dude, it's been a good 2 years since I've posted on this site and it's been a long time since I've given a photo critique. Doing shit for the military takes up a good majority of my time (which must explain why I don't have 2 brain cells to rub together)

Just giving my feedback man, maybe if you had posted that second photo I could have given better feedback.

Also this is badass:

It's a forum called Photo Critiques. . .

Its a place to be critiqued. To help, to advance, to improve. If you don't want any help don't put anything up here.

I don't put much up here either, but I should do some. If I like a shot I took, and think it could be better, but I don't know how then . . .

And yes people should do a little more 'critiquing'.

http://www.pixiq.c...g-a-photo-critique

We all have stuff to learn, and develop our own way.

It's also a place where you can feel good about yourself if you need it.
