| | | i was surprised by that too - and i really couldnt get over how cool the set design was. it looks like it could have been a midsummer nights dream or something - very very cool. going back next weekend and will re-shoot the whole place and hopefully will pull out every lens i have!

| | | took SCARECROW out here this weekend to show him what i stumbled upon. had a super good time with 3 other photographers tearing this place apart. each of us already said 'so - when are we going back?' lets celebrate mommies day this weekend and then get back to this school ASAP. need to hit the 4-5 some odd schools less than 50 or so miles in any direction you choose from here. untold gold - you just have to dig. thanks again to SCARECROW for coming all the way from far north dallas to come see this place with me - loved every moment of saturday!! another funkytowner will be joining us next time man! as a quick aside - i seem to be having major monitor calibration issues. the shots we did this weekend look great on my new home system - go to work this morning - go to flickr and i wanted to puke. the shit is super dark and basically sucks. so - are these photos below crisp or exposed correctly on any of your screens?? as this is not the critique forum id appreciate everyone not saying 'yeah they look like shit from here' im just trying to figure out what i need to do...ive adjusted the monitor and did some calibration tests but something tells me this aint working right...

| | | Damn... definitely would like to hit up Houston... just don't know that I can make it for awhile. I'm heading to Caprock Canyons, Palo Dura, and then rt. 66 up by Amarillo this weekend. Then I'm heading to Moab for a week trip at the end of the month. I'm running out of weekends in May! Have fun ya'll! Here's a few of the shots I got from my trip to this spot with insulinguy last weekend. (it was awesome and totally enjoyed myself - thank you!) It was a great trip and had a blast shooting these, although it wasn't without incident. I had a bit of an accident as for the first time ever, I actually fell entirely through a floor that collapsed under my feet. Scared the shit out of me, but I came away with just some scrapes, bruised and cuts. (rule #1: never trust the flooring in these types of places!)
The cafeteria, although almost gone, sits as it stood when children would eat lunch and trade food items
The refrigerators, stoves and other appliances are all still intact and still have items in them!
Rattlesnakes galore!
This is where I went through the floor. The only way to get to the west wing of the school was to cross these floors. We used remnants of some of the molding pieces as temporary trusses to walk across the rotting beams.
What's left of one of the main classrooms
Obligatory lone chair shot
The gymnasium - it's beautiful with the stage and it's handdrawn backdrops still intact!
The girls room
The view from the front of the school - it's completely overgrown now.
The view from the rear of the building
The playgrounds are now an eerie place, the sounds of children replaced by shrieking owls and howling coyotes.
From behind the school's East wing
Playing with lights in the gymnasium
Ominously the hallways make for excellent shadows and light play
The main hallway at night
Unbelievably, the windows are still mainly intact, there is no grafitti or vandalism whatsoever.
