I'll go ahead and say that we were at Culver High School in the Tarrant City Neighborhood of Birmingham, AL.

Hmmmm, I obviously had no idea where this incident took place but Birmingham, AL wasnt even a consideration.
I was more thinkin, along the lines of Detroit, Camden, Philly, St. Louis maybe even buffalo or Gary Indiana but AL. never crossed my mind.

Glad to hear everything's working out for you.
Also glad you were successful in getting ahold of the probation officer.
I think if you give mom and dad time and sit down with them after this completely goes away you may be able to get them to look at things a little more rationally.
(obviously, I say this without knowing your parents)
Good luck

I was arrested about in the same circumstances in a school in Montreal.First, the school board security show up on the property. Then, many blue lights.Shit.We hide in a mechanical floor accessible by a ladder. We stayed quiet for about half an hour and then we heard a dog barking...We announced ourself, went down the ladder and got arrested me and my exploration partner. At least the police didn't use any excessive force and I was treated with somekind of respect. The crown prosecutor has not decided to file charges against us yet.All the people I share my story with tell me I'm crazy to keep going in abandoned places, but I really can't imagine not doing it.I know it's hard to keep enjoying exploring and now having the fear to get a criminal record..DjCraig,I support you trough this difficult experience and I hope you'll keep doing what you enjoy to do.

Man, I'm not the most active on here, and I don't know you, but I definitely echo the sentiments!

It's good to hear you guys are doing OK and things are getting better.

Honestly, this thread's been an inspiration with respect to this community, and definitely an inspiration in perseverance. Props to you man.

Well damn, dj Craig- I hate to hear about your unpleasant experience. I only check the forums every once in a while and I did notice your absence. I thought to myself "where is that dj craig dude? he's always got some good shit goin on." I decided that something had happened or else you had moved on to other pastimes. I can tell this has shaken you a bit- getting in 'the system' where things are out of your control will tend to do that to you. For lots of reasons I don't get a chance to explore much anymore- gotten older, moved to a mundane location, gotten married, got a serious job, got kids, blah blah blah... I used to explore a lot back in the day when there wasnt a name for it- and I do miss it. I mainly 'armchair explore these days'. You only have a short window of time in your life where you can do that sort of thing without having to answer to anyone- embrace it and enjoy it while you can- just be a bit more cautious and a bit more fleet of foot.

God i hate the 5-0 so much. There just legal thugs.

Exactly. The cops are a government-recognized, taxpayer-funded gang. Their colors are black and blue, and they'd be happy to share them with you.

Wow, the dog part really pissed me off. Your friend was down on the ground complying, the guy lets the dog go and the dog just goes at him for a minute? What the FUCK? That is complete bullshit!

Thanks for all the support!

We pretty thoroughly explored the whole building and there was nothing interesting. They said a local resident called 911 when they saw us going in. My friend's leg healed fine in the end.

Does anyone here happen to know legally what difference it made when my friend got hurt? It seems that the moment he was injured, I went from being under custodial arrest to actual arrest. The cops seemed to genuinely want to just let us go, but claimed they couldn't because he had been hurt.

There was, by the way, a separation between the SWAT team and the cops outside that actually questioned us and took us to jail. The SWAT team's only job was to go in and get us out. The cops outside were much friendlier...although they still fucked us over with the whole "declining medical treatment" thing.

for future reference, and sorry if someone else has already said this to you. take the medical attention when they first offer it. the reason why they explained it the way they did to you and said that if you refused you'd be out much sooner is because they didnt want you to press charges against them for police brutality/mis use of power/ unneeded force etc etc. Also they have cameras all over and more than likely would have reviewed the tapes from the jail seeing how you guys tried to get their attention, went to the nurse for a bleeding wound and only got water, and asked for help on how to use their phone system.

The people who would have seen your friend more than likely would know the difference between bite wounds because people caught by the dogs who don't want to be caught struggle for obvious reasons and the dogs bite more. if you are compliant and dont fight it causes different bite wounds. I know it;s a dog attacking you, this sounds easier said than done for sure.

They still are wounds none the less, but different because of how the people act, as well as how long the dog was allowed to attack. An ex friend of mines older sister was a canine cop and I was always curious about her job and how the dogs attacked and what training they went through yadda yadda. She told me different dogs cause different wounds and also it all depends on if the person is struggling or not and how long the attack dog has to attack to bring the person down.

Plus also they would have seen a wound from when they stomped on his back, again unnecessary force was used. Regardless if you feel later on the cops would say that your friend tried to struggle, still fight it. Those cops more than likely would have to have gone under review as well as the dog. Under pressure hopefully the good cops/swat guys would have stepped up and said maybe we were a little rough or noticed the canine officer release the dog on him for no reason.

Sorry that this happened to you and your friend. im glad they're healed.

Man, that sucks. But seriously. What kind of valuables do you keep in you car that you have a hidden safe bolted and welded to the frame?

My Macbook Pro, my camera, and a few other electronic gadgets. Occasionally I keep some cash in there.

So I went to court today to finally turn in my community service, end my probation, get my record cleared and get it all over with...and it all went horribly and was extremely stressful. First thing when I arrived, after driving six hours to Birmingham, they tried to tell me that my court case wasn't until September. I was told just last week by my probation officer that my court case was today, in August, NOT is September. I was extremely polite and told them that my case was today and eventually they decided that they could "fit me in".

In my original court case, they told me and my lawyer that I would not have to pay court fees because I'm a student, and that I would only have to pay probation fees for as long as it took me to finish my 30 hours of community service. I finished my community service within two months, paid $90 in probation fees for those two months, and confirmed with my probation officer that I would not have to pay any more probation fees, which he said was correct.

When I got to court today, they made me pay BOTH court fees AND probation fees for the entire time, which totaled to just under $500, which is a LOT of money for me right now. I tried to politely but insistently explain that I was told I wouldn't have to pay court fees OR probation fees, but they refused to listen and were extremely rude about it. The district attorney eventually just told me to talk to the judge about it, which I did, and he got PISSED at me, in spite of me being extremely polite about it. So eventually I just paid the money to get it all over with. Now my record is cleared and it's all done. My friend is still waiting for his court case in September.

After I left court, I decided to go by the school I was arrested at and take a few pictures from the street before leaving Birmingham. Within about three minutes of taking pictures from the street (while still wearing my formal attire for court) the bitchy old woman was standing on the porch of her house with her arms crossed, scowling directly at me. I smiled and waved. Her house is directly in front of where we went in. It's much nicer-looking than any of the other houses in the area, and covered in a multitude of "Beware of Dog" signs.

So basically, if anyone does REALLY want to see this (really lame) abandoned school...just don't go in where you are visible from the nice house with the "Beware of Dogs" signs...

I'm so glad it's all over.

^ I've never had an issue with running into PD before, even when they came in to find me once, i made myself known, walked out calmly and they treated me fairly, and sent me on my way with just a ticket, it is truly bothering when the people out there who are supposed to protect us overstep their bounds in a horrifying way like this.

"Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves."
