FairHaven Retirement Home- holy sh!t I'm never exploring alone again

Fairhaven is was a non-profit, Christian based retirement home in Denton, Texas.

The community was built in 1965, opening it's doors on March 3, 1965. It lasted until the early 2000's when it gained a big reputation in town for abuse to their residents, one including a family member of mine; who developed severe bedsores and infections due to mis-care by the staff. Fairhaven was sued and found guilty several times in 2003-2004, leading to massive financial problems and eventually defaulting and closing their doors and kicking helpless senior citizens to the street on October 1st, 2006.

In it's dying days, Fairhaven had one of the lowest Section 8 review scores ever, while charging astronomically high rent.

Here is a picture of my nana and Fairhaven right before it closed.

This explore was supposed to be a pretty cool trip down memory lane for me. When the place closed in 2006, me and some friends got in and explored every nook and cranny one night literally 3 days every it closed. It was insane, every little thing was still there, down to spices in the kitchen and pamphlets on the front desk. I didn't have a camera at that time, so the only images I have are memories. I decided to go alone, since Stankweeed and PrivateJoker were busy, and it ended up almost costing me my life; but we'll get there. Things have gone way, way downhill since I was 17.

Onto the goods.

1. The home as it sits now.

2. Nature has already began to reclaim the parking lot and structure.

3. The entrance, with eviction and forclosure notices but no no tresspassing signs anywhere.

4. Sure.

5. Moving around the side of the building, side of wing 1 of 2

6. In between the two wings. Building is shaped like a big H, two wings with a connecting enclosed breezeway.

7. The connecting breezeway

8. Mmmm, BBQ.

9. Fantastic security, guys. Really fantastic.

10. Breezeway and patio

11. lol, religion

12. Mere forshadowing to the mass amount of vandalism inside

13. Around the backside of the rear wing. Dunno why it's purple.

14. The amazing security continues. None of the boards are ACTUALLY screwed in, the slightest tap and they'd fall away. SIGH.

15. Obligatory

16. Place is really going to shit

17. Amidst all the vandalism, decay, and a long history of abuse on good, innocent people, a wonderful white rose manages to bloom.

18. Even had a wonderful outside area

19. I used to play chess with the residents here

20. Nature is really taking back all the paths

21. Even a little koi pond... That has several koi skeletons and reeks like death.

22. And the loading dock

23. This thing was actively venting natural gas into the atmosphere, there is a very obvious rusthole in the bottom of one of the pipes. Needless to say, this is a HUGE fire hazards and when I left and got calmed down (yes the good bit is still coming) I called Atmos and informed them.

24. Someone was trying to grow broken glass.

25. Ok, enough pussy-footing around the outside. Let's go inside. Main lobby. You WILL have to dodge some motion detectors.(Stay low!)

26. Lots of stuff left behind

27. Front desk

28. Hallway of wing one

29. I won't bore you with all the bedrooms, there are hundreds and they all look the same.

30. Lots of shit left behind too

31. (witty comment here)

32. (insert boogyman here)

33. Then I found this. It's hard to tell but it's blood. The room reeked like blood and it was a thick dark red substance covered with ants... Week to two week old without a doubt. By the patterns, it looks like someone was vomiting blood either from being very, very ill or stabbed in the gut or something.

34. This is the last shot I got.

Here's where shit hit the fan. When I turned the corner and took that shot (34) I could have swore that I heard voices that suddenly cut off in one of the rooms up ahead near the end of the hallway... But I wasn't sure, it could have been the wind, the place settling, anything. My morbid curiosity dug in bigtime; and I started creeping down the hallway towards the far end. When I was about 3/4 of the way down I unmistakably heard whispers coming from the room about 4 feet in front of me. Then, clear as day a very irate voice bellowed "WHO'S THERE?" and I completely froze, and heard someone very big get up in the room and start walking for the door, and which point I turned and started walking very briskly back down the hall, still hoping it was just workers and I could play the "just a brave college photographer" card, and heard bellowed again "WHO THE F*CK IS THERE?" and knew I was probably fucked, turn briefly to grab the wasp spray in my bag, just in case, and see a massive due step out of the room... Seriously, massive, I'm 6'4" and this guy had at least 2" on me. He bellows into the room "SHIT MAN HE'S GOT A CAMERA, F*CKING GET HIM!" And all hell ensues, my POE is way on the other side of the damn building, in the other wing, so I start running for my life and I can hear at least 2, probably 3 guys running after me including the Incredible Hulk. I think they were either drunk or high or some combination of both because I heard them stumble several times over obstacles that didn't slow me down at all and finally about 2/3 of the way back to the POE there was an office chair in the hallway, I shoved it behind me as hard as I could as I ran past and I heard at least one of them trip over it and trip the other guy(s) in the process. I keep running like f*cking crazy and dive through the POE and the hell out of the place, got to my truck and gunned it out of there, got to my house acouple miles away and chain smoked the fuck out of like 4 packs of cigarettes.

God, it scared the shit out of me. NEVER going exploring alone again, EVER.

(EDIT)
I want to make it very, very clear to everyone, you should NEVER explore alone and this is a perfect example of why. If I got myself hurt in that place then the only person to blame would have been my own dumb ass. You should never let your guard down, and veteran explorers need to be even more careful than rookies at that; because we get cocky since we've been in every abandoned place in the world and think we know everything. I'm a veteran, and I made not just one, but a string of stupid mistakes. I assumed I'd be okay and got way too cocky since a). I had been in this location many times before, knew the layout; ect; b). I ignored plenty of evidence that this REALLY wasn't a place to be in alone, like gang graffiti and a bloody room. c). When I thought I heard voices, went to check it out even though I was alone.

I think part of being a veteran and being able to own up to mistakes, and openly admit them so others can learn from them. I'm not afraid to post this story and fully admit that I made an enormously stupid mistake by pressing on, I should have walked the outside and been satisfied with the recon and come back later with more people. Please, listen to Raticus's post below and this story and take heed, Denton is the safest town there is, and this place is at the intersection of two main roads in town, about about a 1/4 mile from a cop station, and it's STILL that bad in there. Just don't go alone. Don't. The world is going to hell in a handbasket, not even a house in the countryside can be considered safe for exploring alone anymore.

That sounds pretty intense man!! Glad you got out ok. That's the very reason I don't care to explore alone.

Damn! That is intense...pretty epic story to tell though...but yeah definitely not good to explore alone in those situations unless you can be extra stealthy and be able to sense anyone else before they sense you which most of the time can be done pretty easily if your careful and watch your steps...groups tend to be louder and easily spotted but can also scare other groups away as well so its 50/50 really. i always go with a buddy just in case tho but I used to go alone on a few occasions but never ran into anyone...honestly ran into more trouble taking people really

You should've got a picture of the big dude. A pic of the three chasing you would have been epic. I never think of that shit if I have to exit hastily.

Wonder what their deal was. You should go back with a companion, maybe you'll find a body.

What did they look like? Were you sure they were homeless?

The only other time I've heard of people in a site coming after an explorer was when they were cooking meth.

Ok, time for Daddy Raticus' lecture of the day. LOL It has gotten to the point where I almost never go alone anymore. I used to think nothing of it, but with the super fast rise of crack/meth labs, drug problems, etc., I just hardly ever do that anymore. Even in the rural area where I am, it's pretty bad. I still explore a few things by myself, or with my son, but places like old hospitals, apartments, nursing homes, places that were made for housing people, seem to have higher chances of running into situations like that.

I have never had an encounter like what you describe here, and I don't ever want to. I am glad you got out of there. Those situations can be very dangerous, and it sounds like this one had the potential to be really serious.

I don't mean to sound like I'm "parenting" here, and I don't mean to sound paranoid. You guys/gals are all adults. But things are different than they were even 4 years ago. Don't underestimate situations like this. I don't know if it has to do with the economy being so bad, or a lot of people migrating to this region from other places, the huge explosion in drug manufacturing, I don't know. Probably a little of all those. I actually think running into drug manufacturers is worse than drug users. I don't know if that's what this was, but it could have been.

But either way, everyone please be careful. The last thing I want to see is one of us getting hurt or killed. Go with a buddy, or 5. Yeah, groups can create noise and draw attention, and there is still no guarantee of safety. But as long as you stay together and not separate in a location, there is strength in numbers.

I could not agree more. If I got myself hurt in that place then the only person to blame would have been my own dumb ass.

Another thing I forgot to say... and this may be the NUMBER ONE RULE.... Always, always, always, tell someone where you will be and about when you will return. If you had gotten into a bad deal here, who would have had a clue where you were? Except maybe a day or two later when the cops found your truck. Maybe. But by then, whats the use.

I only saw the big guy, he was hispanic with loads of prison tattoos and buzzed hair.

I was REALLY close to the room they came out of, like 4' or 5' away, so if they were actively cooking drugs I probably would have smelled it, I didn't smell a thing.

I think they were probably in the process of setting up a or taking down a lab, about to cap someone, or just really, really cracked out.

There were plenty of active motion sensors around where I got in, (not where they were though) and getting in I didn't set any off, but on the way out I tripped at least 3 or 4 of them, so hopefully the authorities got the tip and showed up and caught those guys, I didn't go back to check.

Agreed again. Thankfully someone did know where I was and was under instruction to send police if I didn't come back in 2 hours.

Wow...that's intense. And illustrates the point of why I rarely explore alone, even places I have been hundreds of times and know like the back of my hand.

Just reading that got me scared lol.

I explore by myself a lot. I've encountered hostile people before, but nothing like that! That's insane! Also would have pissed me off, as soon as I left I would have call the police gotten those shits pinched.

You did the right thing though, running your ass off and not looking back, there's no shame in that, even if you leave a urine trail.

You just described my worst nightmare, really glad you made it out unharmed.

You could also look at it as a blessing that you were alone. Had there been someone else there with you it could have hindered your escape. Someone in your group could have been slower to react, or slower in general, its not like we could leave a friend behind in a situation like that.

The flip side is partners and groups make more noise which could have alerted the occupants sooner and you would have been a greater distance from their door when the guy shouted and had a still hairy but more of a lead to escape. (I really doubt any of us even if we had five on three odds would have chosen to fight instead of flee.)

Worse case, you go in a group, but the group is separated - I can't speak for others but when I'm in a location with a group once we've entered and gotten a general feel of the place the group tends to fragment leaving us "alone together" which could have really complicated things.

Again, I'm REALLY glad you're safe!

That is so SCARY!! I'm glad you're ok! Love the awesome creepy shots. I myself like going with 3 or more guys to be safe.... back in 03’ when I did my 1st hospital that was in the middle of nowhere at night we had about 12 or more safety in numbers!

and yes the day will come you shall die here..the day will come when it too will be swallowed by decay forgotten …the day will come they discover and fear the ghost that was once you..** VL
