Alright, here's my dilemma:

Photos of my explores have gotten into the hands of the chief editor of our school newspaper. Well, they actually came across them a while ago and asked for an interview, but I respectfully declined for a few reasons...

1) College and Scholarship opportunities might be affected
2) Teachers might look at me funny. I'm the kid that teachers see as Mr. Goody-two shoes, and I didn't want something silly to mess with letters of recommendation (see above)

Anyways, they have been rather persistent. The last issue will come out right before I graduate. I'm very tempted to, because I'm set for college and I don't have any full-ride-super-special-scholarships to worry about any more.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and here is the battle going on in my head:

1) These photos are already on Facebook. It's public (within privacy settings). I should just get over it and do it.

2) Someone rather dull might get all excited about it, find their way into somewhere and maim or kill themselves....

3) I can explain my need to take risks, and why I do this...Rather than doing the stereotypical rebellious high school activities, such as driving erratically, doing drugs, drinking, and humping like rabbits.

4) I could explain the educational aspect of exploring. I'm a ridiculously curious person, and I learn more in one night of exploring and the research that leads up to that night than I do in a full week of school.

5) Someone important will get pissed and do something!

6) I could stress the importance of the "Leave only footprints, take only photos" idea...

7) Talk about the importance of honesty and respect for law enforcement.

8) I wonder if I can go Anonymous...But it's on Facebook. Most people know.

9) I'm graduating. Might as well do something I can look back on

Anyways, I need to decide soon...

What's your thoughts, has anyone else had a chance/experience like this, and what are the chances of this going bad and/or awesome?

EDIT: Forgot #7 in reasoning.

From the information you've given, it doesn't sound like much harm could come from it, if any. Unless there's something you aren't telling us, like you have really strict parents, agreed to some non-law breaking contract at school, etc, you should have no worries. And don't worry about dumb people hurting themselves, they'll find a way no matter what!

Out of curiosity, how many people would be reading this school newspaper?

To fail in what you've yet to achieve is more the spirit of exploration than to make no attempt at all.

It's a school of about 2,000 students and 126 staff.
The paper itself is very high quality, and has won national and state competitions for many consecutive years, so it gets around.

I say go for it. This pasttime is becoming more mainstream, dare I even say "cool" and not just something crazy people do (although many people still think we're crazy). If it makes you feel better to go Anonymous or use an alias, do that. I can see why you're nervous, but in general I don't think this is going to destroy your life.

Who knows, maybe down the road when you are a big shot photographer, this article will help you get more exposure for your trade and you'll be "famous."

As long as sensitive information is handled right (locations and names and such), I'll say go for it.
No one has to know that you were breaking any laws, and you can instead focus on how great the hobby is in all its other facets-- educationally, physically, creatively-- and be that source of inspiration for people.

I'd say go for it, very carefully.

Don't get ANY information about ANY locations as far as where, I guaren-god-damn-tee you if you publish information about the location of a cool abandonment to a bunch of high schoolers, it will almost overnight be overrun with beer cans, graffiti, trashed, looted and the cops will have it closed down and locked up tight within a week then turn their attention towards other abandonments.

But as far as explaining why you do it, go for it! I personally wouldn't label it as urban exploration or mention uer.ca just to keep the idiots out, but otherwise, you earned it, go brag.

If you're really worried, I'd say go anonymous. Or adopt a pen name or code name or whatever. And if you're worried about your photos being public, make them private.

Otherwise I'd say go for it, and be cautious about all details. Give them some good photos for everyone to admire, and otherwise make UE sound like a messy, unpleasant hobby.
