It's just so much more expensive than in America..
Amazon.ca has it at $80 new and $50 used, while Amazon.com has an older edition at 12 bucks (which is $50+$12 shipping in canada)

| | | | On rope is the best book out there, period. I looked over DJ Craig's copy and bought a copy for myself a few weeks later. If you're really poor and want to prussick up it, that's 1$/foot of rope, 10$ for enough webbing to make a harness (you'll lose circulation in your legs), 10$ of cordlette, and 20$ for a bad hook. Oh, and I forgot biners. Another 10$ for hardwarestore gear. Realistically, you're looking at $150 if you buy used gear (don't buy used rope) on sale, and probably $200 if you want any flexibility in your setup.
Other tips: Grappling hooks are always loud, and always sketchy. I've never gotten to the top and thought "my, what a safe and secure hold for this hook." The last time I got 25' up the rope only to find out it had grabbed a sheet of plywood, and the plywood was only not moving because the rope was holding it down.
Do you have a specific target in mind? 9 times out of 10 there's a better way in/over/etc.

| | | | Climbing trees is one of the ways to learn ascending/rappeling. Throw a lock with a cheap long wire over a high branch, feed through your main rope, attach it to trunk or another tree. Ascend, chill on a tree, then rappel... Then you can learn how to disconnect ascenders on the rope and rappel so you dont have to be on a branch... Then you can try rappel off a bridge. Its all crazy fun=)

That's a very cool idea about practising with trees. I've never actually climbed one before. I'll have to look for some trees this weekend

This! Would really influence what answers are given.
Sign up at an indoor climbing wall, join the climbing club that meets there, and get some solid real life outdoor experience before even thinking about using it in an urbex context. It's not as simple as "hooking" up ropes and doing a ninja over a wall or down a cliff-face - unless you want to seriously hurt or kill yourself. In fact, I can't really think of too many instances in which you'd use serious climbing gear whilst urbex'ing. You are going to need to retrieve the rope on your exit, so that really only leaves two possible scenarios:
- Descending from the anchor point to get access somewhere, and then climbing back up. Carry the rope away.
- Setting clip-in points whilst ascending over/up a wall, having someone belay, and removing them along with the rope on your way down... which sort of limits what you can climb (unless you want to drill into the wall).
Either way, your expensive rope and gear will remain there whilst you explore around the site. Leaving it open for theft, and creating an obvious sign that you are in there. My urbex buddy and I both have a few climbing slings that we can throw over catches on the outside of buildings to get access to emergency ladders etc. I can't say using my harness and gear has ever crossed my mind...
But, anyway... practice, practice, practice. Books can only teach you the theory. Buy good quality gear and get very confident with knot-tying. You don't want to get killed because of cheap gear or shitty knots.

Also, free-climb trees. On some climbs a rope will get in the way, slow you down, or not be quite long enough.
