New Orleans- Caffin Avenue Home/Spiritual Church- or- "When buildings arent what they seem..."

Caffin Ave- Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, LA.

Came across what I thought was a home in Feb. Turns out it was also "Queen Esther Divine Spiritual Temple of Christ"- a black spiritual church.

After doing research, I found out someone was trapped there (but lived) during Hurricane Katrina.

>>>>Old wooden “shotgun” houses — long buildings one story high and one room wide — were thrown off the cinder blocks they had been jacked up on (as a futile precaution against flooding), and crushed by the floodwaters that burst through the broken levees on the nearby industrial canal. “Cars were floating by. Houses were floating down the street,” said Washington, who sat out the storm in a room above his stepmother's church, the Queen Esther Spiritual Divine temple, before swimming to safety when the waters began to recede. “I heard people screaming, howling for help.”

It is on a list in New Orleans to be demolished, if it hasnt been already. The list its on is from Feb 21, 2011 but I am unsure if they've gotten around to demo-ing it yet. The list is pretty long. (photos were taken of the buildings on the list and put on flickr)

Many houses actually floated right off their piers during the flooding. This one didnt, but the supports are seriously rusted, and the floor was extremely unstable in many spots.

The ceiling fans in flooded buildings of New Orleans usually seem to have what I have dubbed "Katrina Droop". I have found it in multiple buildings, including Six Flags.

Crazy stuff, I just spent an hour reading about X-codes and how they work. Fascinating.

Great shots. I really like that old light. So whats up with all the missing plaster and lathes? Some post Katrina attempt at cleanup?

Ruins, the fate of all cities.

DWTaylor- pretty much. With all the water that stood in those houses & all the ruined household items and appliances full of water & rotting food & whatnot, houses were gutted in the area just to help with sanitation and smell. They had a lot of people who did that for work after the hurricane, went around & gutted houses for people.
