Old Schoolhouse (?) in Morse, LA

So a friend of mine told me on her parents property there was an abandoned building I should see & we headed out to take a look. Sadly, the roof had partially collapsed on the building, we think due to ice we had here in February.

Speculation is that this mightve been a schoolhouse at one point. The house my friend's parents lives in is also old, and they think the teacher may have lived in the house and taught at the school (the house is about a 10 minute ride into the woods from the house on a 4 wheeler- its on the bayou/waterfront) and children from the surrounding areas would travel to the school every day.

After going there, I am unsure if that is what the building was really built for, but I havent been able to find any information about it online or any clues that tell me what this really mightve been. Obviously (from the pictures) its been used for vagrants and such over the years. If any of you have suggestions or ideas as to what it mightve been, I am all ears!

Murals painted inside the building on the back walls

No government property anymore, lol Nice set of pics man and nice find. The bayou area looks cool! Like how you can see the watermarks. Thanks for posting.

Great old building and location.

The shotgun construction is a bit unique for a building that size if it was originally a school. That type of construction indicates a workspace/living space arrangement, or dual living space. The inner wall removal was probably for a full conversion to workspace in a building that size.

If it was in governments hands at some time, nobody likes paperwork like they do, so there's some records somewhere. If you're really curious, check what the county has for records on the site.

Ruins, the fate of all cities.

Yeah, I have to admit I am not 100% that it was a school, its just what they think it may have been. It seemed more like it wouldve been a home or some such type of building due to the layout & attached space that seemed like an old "barn"- what I imagine would be the equivalent of today's carport, but then it has those murals out of nowhere...one has sort of an indian theme to it (in my opinion, anyway) so I even tried searching online with that angle in mind, but nothing still.

The location this is at is on really, really remote land that is owned by a friend's family. The "town" (Morse-wikipedia actually calls it a village; that is probably more accurate. Its in Acadia Parish- we dont have counties in LA) that its on the outskirts of hasnt been around as long as other towns (1906), and I did try to find some info online, to no avail. I thought about calling the town or going there to see what I could find out about it, but when I tell you Morse is TINY, I'm not kidding...less than 1,000 people live there. I dont even know who would handle records that might give me information there...

The front door has a hook on the outside, but no lock inside or out, so I hesitate to think it was a residence (other than for vagrants) and the back had this area that was sort of...fenced in...by posts. Also, the swamp is literally ALL around this location. Its really strange, I would love to know more history on it and what it was once used for and why it has a govt property sign on it.
