Old Silver Creek one room school house.

This is the old Silver Creek school, located between the ghost towns of Hallet and Maramec in north central Oklahoma. Originally a wooden structure, it was replaced with a substantial stone building after the original burned. The layout included several outbuildings, and a windmill with a concrete trough. The old school bus was a surprise.

The school was closed in the early 1950s and consolidated with the Hallet school district.

It was common for many of these old schools to be used as homes after they where deactivated and there was evidence that was the case with this school.

I was able to find one picture of the original wooden school, but nothing yet on the newer stone structure.

The school sits atop a small hill next to the highway on the east side.

The entrance and side have a large concrete area wrapping the building and where almost certainly either covered or encased in wood.

This was the main entrance.

I have no idea what these steps where for. Outhouse maybe?

The windmill and trough.

The old school bus.

Notice the seats folded down from the side and where placed back up when not in use.

Some rather ornate lighting.

Interesting discoloration on the old glass.

The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Ditto. Great job man. I really like how you include some of the history. Makes for a really interesting gallery. Nice!

These small country schools didn't cover much distance, so they probably where related. Large families then to. I'm assuming they where looking into the sun and squinting and not "Children of the Corn", at least, that's what I tell myself.

It's tough to find information of stuff like this, as they've been largely forgotten.

Thanks for the comments. You have to be creative when there's very little "urban" to explore.

Boy about 6 from the left is wearing gators. Must have been spring and either muddy or slushy outside.

Those screens on the windows look like asylum mesh.

I'm surprised more split stones like that foundations aren't salvaged for building projects.

Actually, I've seen the old quarried stones reused quite often. A couple of old building in town where sold just for the stone. They brought in a couple of semi's and hauled it all away.
