| | Airplane Salvage/Boneyard < on 3/3/2011 4:36 PM >
| | | There is an airplane salvage/boneyard not too far from me that seems like it would be cool to check out. Problem is its still active. I havent had an opportunity to do much recon and it looks like its kind of in the middle of nowhere. It seems to me though that this type of place would have good security. Has anyone attempted this type of thing before? If so was the security very tight? My main concern is that there may be more security that I might not see during recon such as motion sensors, etc. and while its kind of close its not so close that I will be going out other than maybe once during the day that I am going and am planning on exploring at night. Any recommendations? Had any bad experiences with airplane boneyards? [last edit 3/3/2011 4:37 PM by adventuregirl - edited 1 times]

| | | My advice, go there during business hours and ask if you can look around and take some photos. You would be AMAZED at how well that often works out. And, to sweeten the pot, you can offer to email them some photos if they want to hang one up in their office. Again, you would be surprised at how easy that will open the door for you and get access everywhere, especially in those type of environments, salvage yards and such.

| | | I've been salivating for that place for a long time now. If I lived out there, I would hit it. Try for a midnight full moon. Wear shoes that don't give off great tracks. Hide in a plane if anyone comes along, and if they bring dogs be prepared with beef jerky. Edit - my bad, I thought it was the one in Arizona. | | | I've done several boneyards in Tucson Arizona and my advice to you would be as follows. Scout the places in the daytime. If they look run down and you can see fences in disrepair then you can be pretty sure they don't have any additional security besides the people who work there. Ask them if you can look around and take pictures. You would be surprised at the answer you might get. Do research on the interwebs. If they have a nice website and are well established, chances are their security measures are as well. If you can't even find their name on the web, chances are they don't put a lot of thought into anything, including security. Your not going to run into motion sensors in the yard where they keep the aircraft unless its owned by the military. These places are really just junkyards with planes instead of cars. Just be careful around buildings, you may encounter motion sensors there. My last piece of advice to you would be to watch out for dogs. You don't want to come face to face with a growling rottweiler at 2 in the morning.

Yes, and you can roam around in the daylight shooting to your heart's content. Much better than meeting the guard dogs in the dark.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |
