I, personally, really want to climb cranes as well. I've even dreamed about it, but are the laws on cranes stricter than just construction sites?

I don't think that there are any specific laws, but I do think it would be a bit harder to explain yourself if you were caught on a crane. Anyone who caught you would probably be confused as to why you weren't stealing or scrapping anyway. In some states, trespassing on a construction site can be a felony, but I don't know anyone who has ever been charged with that kind of trespassing.

| | | | Thanks, that's what I thought. I know it's a 3rd degree felony in Florida for a construction site, but I didn't know if it was worse for a crane. Anyway, I really want to go, but all of the ones in my immediate area were taken down. So I guess I'm goin downtown.

Thanks very much for your help. I wasnt thinking about the swaying or the lack of resting room. I think you have a fantastic idea the water tower may be a good place to start. I am just hoping a climb like that will be scary enough that these smaller climbs wont seem like anything.

"You can get into big time trouble. Water supply systems are listed as 'critical infrastructure' and as a result nobody has any sense of humor with people who mess around with them.
BTW - when you are caught, you can expect a lot of publicity and severe penalties as it is likely that the prosecutors will want to send the message not to mess with things that are vital to public safety".
ran into that on yahoo answers. he's got a good point specially with how quickly people are to suspect you to be a terrorist.

| | | | You tend to get used to it as you do it more. They do sway a tad in the wind and you can feel other people walking on the counter jib, but it isn't going anywhere Take your time, go slow and don't look down, at first.
If you go in the colder months, the operators cabin is a good spot to warm up
The view from the top is well worth it!

| | | | On the subject of water towers- they are generally a safer bet than a crane, because they never have security and are generally less lit up and don't tend to be right next to busy streets. Though in either case, you just have to appraise the situation. There are quite a lot of abandoned water towers, and most active ones aren't closely watched, but there are also water towers that would be a terrible idea to climb due to visibility. You could also do cell and radio towers, though they are more likely to have security measures.

Just watch out for the controls... Crane operators aren't known for carefully shutting everything down.

I haven't seen any active security; just fences, locks, and ladder-guards, even on water towers with colocated cell repeaters. It's almost scary how little security they have.

I am scared of heights and need to get over it. I have forced myself up ladders and on top of roofs but its scary and people usually have to prod me into it and I am sick of missing out on all the cool stuff/views from the catwalks/other high places in abandoned buildings.
I have been seeing pictures of tower cranes people have climbed and was thinking it might be a good way to get over my fear. I am kind of clumsy and not a super agile climber is this a terrible idea? If not, for the people that have climbed these what do I need to know before I climb my first one?

This crane pictured above was ten storeys high, and I don't recall any swaying.
One crane I'm hoping to climb soon is about the same height, but it's attached to a building under construction, so I should be able to take the regular stairs up and cross over to the crane with no problem.

Also, remember that the crane cab will likely be very comfortable and secure, and may be a good place to drink a beer.

The infamous power plant crane we did was the nicest crane I've ever seen (including ones I've seen in images from other people here) most are wobbly and/beat up because many companies rent cranes, this one was probably purchased outright and looked brand new.
