Fun with long exposures - my first exploration

I’ve been attempting to define my photographic style for some time now and recently stumbled upon urban exploration. I have not done much yet, but I know I have finally found my niche. Above being able to capture the beauty in decay I have always strived for, the creative boost fuelled by the excitement of infiltration is a source of inspiration that will never be topped.
Here are some shots from my first exploration inside an apartment building construction site. (I hope construction sites qualify as urban exploration; I know it’s not as cool as an old building … but its cold out there and this was the closest place to check out. . . Hope to visit much cooler places ASAP)

I am new to UER, this is my first post, consider it an introduction as well as a request for critique, I appreciate any feedback.
I apologize if I the duel nature of this post is unacceptable in this forum or if the location involved falls short true “urbex”. I aim to contribute positively to your online community so please tell me if I am out of line.

All photos taken with a Rebel XSI and an EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens in raw format

1

Aperture: f/6.3
Shutter speed: 6s
ISO: 200
Focal Length 18 mm
with flash
(mask added in photoshop)

2

Aperture: f/9
Shutter speed: 1/160
ISO: 100
Focal Length 18 mm
with flash
(mask added in photoshop)

3

Aperture: f/6.3
Shutter speed: 6s
ISO: 200
Focal Length 18 mm
No flash

4

Aperture: f/14
Shutter speed: 25s
ISO: 100
Focal Length 18 mm
no flash
hand held LED

5

Aperture: f/14
Shutter speed: 30s
ISO: 100
Focal Length 18 mm

hand held LED

This one is crazy... shot through an unfinished patio door so it does not show much building... but it turned out really cool. it is me holding a mannequin torso and moving around through a slow shutter shot, somehow my face morphed into a demon of some sort.

none of these are truly "spectacular", sorry to say.... to tell you the truth, it really looks like you have a point-and-shoot and your buddies didn't stay still. I think the one with the figure in the hallway is best. The second one is just plain flat and lifeless.

We're all just trapped between the stippled earth and the stubbled sky.

True, they are not the best . . . I will probably wait until I have gold to post for critique again… I’m just pumped I found such a cool new hobby and the perfect online community to support it that I had to jump in with what I have and get my feet wet I guess. I’ll show some restraint from here on out though.

Yes it does, I was experimenting with long exposure to purposely ghost the figures and invoke motion and intrigue. Maybe I failed, but it is still a fun learning experiment.

Photographically, yeah that one is pretty bad, the only reason why I posted it is cause it sort of reminds me of Escher style illusion, giving it some sort of artistic merit (?). It comes together pretty two dimensionally as you describe, but at the same time it plays with witch way is up.

Anyways, thank you for your input, I appreciate it and hope that my response does not sound overly defensive.

It takes courage to post in the photo critiques section, I avoid it because I'm my own worst critic. Welcome to the UER website, nice to see another local which means you can buy the beer when NAMC II goes down this summer.(*)

If you want ghostly pictures, dress in black with backlit scene, set the camera to a 5-10s exposure, then experiment with moving slowly and stopping in that exposure time.

Also... is that... are you exploring in a Guy Fawkes mask?

Thanks, I’ll try that out next time . . . I’ve pulled off much better shots like this before working with a model . . . I’ll admit that the photos above where quick and dirty with little planning... Next time I will take the time to do things right . . . being my first time exploring we were pretty caught up in the moment... which lead to sloppy shooting.

I added it in photoshop to cover my friends face

Because that would make me look suspicious? Or is there some sort of unspoken rule against exploring in a Guy Fawkes mask.

Thank you, I’m glad you appreciate it.
And good advice... I don’t let criticism faze me. I love to hear advice that helps me improve, no matter how harsh it is, but if it’s just a negative comment along the lines of thanks for wasting my time with your garbage I just shrug it off. To each their own, art does not need to be technically perfect to have value. I had fun and these shots capture the mood of the moment.

You know, I'm thinking of having it in July on my birthday again but this time at my house.

3 and 5 have some potential, but tell your friends to hold friggin' still, and use a tripod. Motion blur can be used effectively sometimes but in these cases it's just distracting.
