| | | Power Plant < on 1/26/2011 5:23 AM >
| | | This is another Austin Power Plant (not the one that there's already a current thread about). It has a long and extremely controversial history as an obnoxious industrial structure in the middle of a poor neighborhood. Due to increasing outcry over the plant after a series of fires it had, it was shut down in 2007. It's now in local news again as the city is moving forward to begin dismantling it very soon. The only thing really delaying it at this point was a dispute over which company to hire for the demolition. The council will resolve that on Thursday and then I assume the plant will be slowly destroyed. I explored it last Sunday and it was astoundingly preserved. There was trash in the trash cans, some food in a refrigerator (yes, gross), and neatly stacked books on shelves. I didn't even see a single piece of graffiti. It was very eery. Many of these photos aren't very good and by no means give an adequate tour of the plant (it's a big place and I was racing to tour it in my relatively small amount of daylight), but I wanted to give a glimpse of it since it seems more or less unexplored and will soon be filled with construction workers tearing it apart. Modified to remove the name of the location. 1.

That is generally frowned upon.

| | | Very nice indeed! I've wanted to see this place for a while now. I went by there today to check out the status but there were quite a few cars in the parking lot. That's what makes me nervous about checking it out. I also noticed some signs up for a demolition company but not a whole lot of evidence that they've gotten any start on the job yet.

| | | I guess Thursday's vote was actually a vote to rebid. They're now going to repeat the entire bidding process for hiring a company to dismantle the plant. Yay for disorganized bureaucracies!
