| | | Posted by DJ Craig I spent a whole night alone in an abandoned hotel in Dayton. This hotel is in incredibly good condition. In the hotel rooms the beds were made and everything was intact and clean. But there was a huge thunderstorm that night with a lot of thunder and lightning. And the whole hotel was full of skylights. It was so recently abandoned that the clocks behind the front desk were still ticking. I am not superstitious at all and not very easily scared exploring, but that was a very eerie experience and I didn't sleep very well that night. But I DID make it through the night there and it beat sleeping in the back of my car.
|
Now this, I would do. I've seen photos of a hotel like this (might even be the same one you are talking about). If an abandonment is really nice, I've been to it before, and it's not dangerous, I'd consider spending the night just for lulz. Hell, I did it when I was homeless way before I started actually exploring places for photo purposes. But I'm too skeered of the dark to explore at night in general.

| | | Hell yes solo night exploring! Abandonments, drains, you name it... I usually feel less like I will be noticed and it is an awesome adrenaline rush! Plus you can stop in a darkly-covered area, be totally silent and just look out and listen to the silence...it becomes a more surreal experience.

| | | Haven't tried it by myself yet, but night time exploring is mostly what I do anyway. I think I might try this.

| | | It's mostly how I go. I like the solitude and the fact that I can really take as much time as I want to shoot. Steel mills, power stations, warehouses, the craziest one was the missile silo, which I probably should have brought a friend. You play it safe: tell people where you are, when you'll be back, pack a lunch, a phone and more than one trusty flashlight. Oh, and tripod, definitely a tripod.
Let's both imagine I have something clever here. |

I found a dilapidated restaurant one night that was being renovated. Construction gates thrown up, equipment all over the place, front door ripped out. Popped in by myself and poked around. It's open now, a really nice wine bar/tavern.

| | | Actually, I explore mostly at night, simply because of photography. I'll often arrive at the end of the day and then stick around through the evening. It's the best way to work, since there's usually nobody around (damn orbs!)

| | | I've explored a few locations by myself at night. Also have slept on the roofs of a few. Just be very careful at night, especially in a place you haven't been yet.

| | | I usually go alone. My current group of cronies are not that adventurous, preferring to fart around playing WoW and making Star Dreck references to each other. I'm still trying to get them to check out the Spirit Drain in Orinda with me. They keep saying "YEAH! That would be cool!" and bagging out on the actual plans. Oh well. I've pretty much given up on getting them to try anything even remotely dangerous. I prefer nights, actually, but now that I work late night/early morning, it puts a crimp in things. I do try to work in a few night missions, though. The darkness and quiet can be surreal. I usually plan carefully, do scouting and recon, maybe a test-run if it is high-risk/high visibility. Especially if I'm going in at night, that's when the ice weasels come out to feed.
