You need to retake the photograph at a different time of day/season/year. The lighting is flat, which fails to highlight whats really interesting about that feature: the texture of the walls/earth. The composition is great, but the timing is all wrong.
Go back to the spot and observe it during the morning, midday, and dusk and watch how the lighting changes. Watch what the sky does during these times as well. Look at how different weather patterns do different things to the scene. Observe how people interact with the site as well. After doing this, you'll have your photograph.

| | | | Tron, I take no offense. I did not post these here for an ego boost. I wanted serious feedback. I appreciate you taking the time and I 100% want to do what you are saying. I know that it was all wrong, the clouds that day are what made the sky appear blown out. I would love to get a shot of this in the spring, but those steps are right on probably one of the most popular hiking trails in the Phoenix area. There is a seasonal waterfall just above those steps and people flock to it and cluster there. Added to that problem is that you cant be there before dawn as the park is locked down at night.
Luckily, as I said this isnt sending pics in for publishing. The guy knows i am brand new to this. I have only had my DSLR for 3 months and he knows I really dont know much yet. It is a favor or my aunt that works there with him. He told her if it looked like I could possibly know what I am doing, or had potential he would arrange for me to go on some shoots with people that get shots for the magazine, or possibly take me out himself to help me learn. Kind of an internship I guess. (but not really, just hands on help from a pro that regularly publishes in a worldwide publication. that's priceless in my book.) Here are a couple that I did send.
