macro lens for Canon

I am looking to maybe get a macro lens, but I was wondering if any of you had any advice. I was looking at a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens. It is about $250, which is about my budget, I top out at $300 unfortunately. Any suggestions?

I would go with the Canon - EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro USM Lens

refurbished you can get it for under/around $400.

used market $300-ish, currently on ebay there's one for $323+free shipping and another for $346+free shipping.

pro: it's one of the BEST canon lenses sub 1000, also it is their BEST non-L prime.

con: price is slightly out of your range, EF-S only works on crop sensor which I imagine wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not a Canon shooter myself, but the focal range of 50mm and below is very good for most things encountered during Urbex. For Insects and stuff you probably need more (100+).

Why not spend $10 and get extension tubes?

I was ale to swindle someone out of a perfect conditioned 60mm f/2.8 for #300, so I would give it a few shots, I am very happy with my purchase =)

con: took me two months to find someone who would do it for 300.

The problem with the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro is that it only does 0.5x magnification instead of 1x like a true macro. Getting a used EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro like TheVicariousVadder suggested is probably your best bet.

If you don't want to go used, the Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX DG Macro can be had new for around $300 and does proper 1x magnification.

Thanks for the input guys. Damn you Hydro and Washu, did you two really have to throw 2 opposite reviews of the lens right there? lol. I have to go hit a camerashop and see if I can throw one of these on the camera and try it out myself.

Anyone else any suggestions?

That EF-S 60mm USM is a sweet lens for pretty cheap and that would be the one I would snag as well.

I didn't mean to say that the Compact Macro is bad, just that it isn't a true macro. The quality is just fine. It's really sharp, but then again almost all macros are.

If 0.5x is enough for the shots you want then it will do fine. Just be aware that the kit lens (assuming you have one) can do almost 0.3x so you aren't gaining a huge amount of magnification. The image quality of the 50 macro is much better though.

I love Sigma lenses. I have not used this lens, but I have read a lot about it and it seems to be a great buy.

Ok, I was just given an offer of $170 for A Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro Autofocus Lens. anyone have any thoughts on this lens? Can I go wrong with that price? I am guessing that it doesn't have IS at that price. I cant get on anywhere at work to check reviews. (yeah, but I can get on here. Stupid work IT guys.)

Any thoughts?

It sucks. Stay far away from it.

What has been mentioned previously are decent choices. But for $300.. if you want a really kick-ass macro lens, look for a Tokina AT-X 90mm f/2.5 macro in Nikon mount (via adapter, I'm not sure if an M42 version exists). It's manual focus and only does 1:2 (0.5x).. but it's by far, one of the best macros you'll find.

Just my $.02.

I'm sure someone will find an exception, but if it says "Macro" in the lens name but is a zoom then it's not a real macro. Just a zoom that can focus a little closer than average. That lens can only focus a tiny bit closer than the kit lens. It's not even as good as the 50 2.5. It also just sucks.

If this f/1.8 lens actually had macro capabilities, it would be great. But alas..
