I Will Probably Get Flamed for This

The title pretty much says it all. I wrote an article on the "Introduction to Urban Exploration" and it was picked up by Digital Photography School, a community of photographers with millions of page views a month and over 530,000 newsletter subscribers.

I got into UE because of the photography, so thought it was fitting for me to write about it and to tell people how to get involved...much like how I did it about 8 months ago.

Here are my notes:

1. Most of it is BS common sense stuff...not giving anyway any secrets
2. I plugged UER
3. I suck as a writer
4. You can call me a sell out, it won't bother me

Here's the link, let the flaming begin: http://www.digital...-urban-exploration

It’s also known as UE or urbex in some circles, but is often mistaken as simply the discovery of “urban decay” or “abandonment” properties. However, the broader definition also includes the exploration of rooftops, drains, sewers, construction sites, or any other location that may have restricted access.

I have to say, I have a bigger problem with it being mistaken for "sightseeing in an urban setting, any urban setting."

Otherwise it seems pretty unobjectionable. You make a few sweeping statements not everyone on here would agree with, but it's the sort of thing that noobs should be hearing.

I agree, it was suppose to be noob friendly. I didn't want to say "some people actually break shit, vandalize, and steal", etc.

I had a tough time coming up with a definition, so I am pretty sure I mostly copied Wikipedia. The article could have been on the definition of UE alone...

I describe it as acting out these natural impulses:

"What's in here?"
"That looks like it'd be fun to play on."

That's what brings me into drains, cranes, tunnels, buildings, utility spaces, factories, and hotels. Once I'm there...sure, it's fun to take pictures. I enjoy photography. Bu it all comes from that innate curiosity about things I see.

Include some resources. Cave Clan's Approach.txt for drains, and maybe some photostory blogs for the other stuff - actionsquad, sleepycity.net, and such for building/industry/drains.

Not to start a definition war, but I think the most important word in defining UE is "forbidden." That covers most of the tunnels, rooftops, and abandonments we go in.

Well, the article wasn't bad, fairly informative I'd guess to a newcomer. The only downside would be newbies trying it out and getting hurt and blaming others for it.

Needs more metro, more subway, more drains, more bridges, more cranes, more infrastructure, more radio masts, more powerstations, more chimneys, more trains, more bunkers, more planes, more military sites... basically more balls out busting shit the fuck up, getting chased by security and the like. It comes across way too tame.

That stuff broke me! Countless bruises and scrapes, and I don't even know how many times I've said "Omg blood, who is bleeding, whop got cut?" only to be told "uuuuh, you."

But for serious, congrats. You have done us proud : )

Dsankt: You need to go have a cup of tea and think about how this was for the childrens (well, sort of childrens lol). Trying to get the childrens killed?

I have to say, I have a bigger problem with it being mistaken for "sightseeing in an urban setting, any urban setting."

Why? That's what it is. And why are you so worried about being mistaken for a sightseer? What is it about your thing that you would feel slighted if people thought you were sightseeing? Why should your hobby be distinguished from that?

Not to start a definition war, but I think the most important word in defining UE is "forbidden." That covers most of the tunnels, rooftops, and abandonments we go in.

If that's the case, and what you're about is breaking laws and finding action, I think you should choose a different label than 'urban exploration'. Because the difference between the label and the little insular subset of activities you want to reduce things to is about equivalent to taking American Football and calling it 'American Conversation'.

And I think you need to look carefully at the definition of forbidden, and decide whether that's really the thing you're going to hang your whole hobby on. Not just because there's no evidence for entry having been forbidden to lots of places (storm drains in many jurisdictions, for instance; abandoned structures that aren't houses on properties that aren't fenced/posted/whatever; etc.), but because of what it says about what you're doing. According to you, the point of your hobby is to break laws and ignore the interests (legitimate or otherwise) of property owners, their neighbours, communities, and the state. That sounds like a pretty selfish, disrespectful, and short-sighted thing to be doing, and it sounds like various authorities should be going out of their way to make an example of you.

I have to say, you do make some pretty dumb statements, like
urban exploration and photography are mutually exclusive activities

and

Explorers are not criminals

and

Never explore on your own. Ever.

Calling your own photographs "stunning" is also kinda weak.

Time to get that prescription refilled.

This doesn't strike me as a terribly appropriate response to be coming from a moderator. If you don't feel like answering constructive inquiries about what you said and the assumptions underpinning it (and since you yourself were criticizing Neil's article, you should certainly be able to defend that criticism), you can feel free to stay out of the thread.

Anything else doesn't become that fluorescent star.

The only personal attack I've seen in this thread was the one you directed at me.
