Too over the top?

Yes, this is HDR, though I'm hoping the colour is not too overstated? Something is bugging me about this, possibly the bottom half? I don't normally do a lot of this so would be interested to hear your input.

The sky is a little over done. Everything looks underexposed. I don't get the fake tilt-shift effect though.

You've got me. The original was a bit backlit and I figured the sky might help with it, but I agree now, it's definitely too saturated. The blur was added because I felt the ambient light being added back in with the HDR was too strong - i should probably just have gone on tweaking the settings rather than adding it (or not done HDR at all).

I've since poked around a bit more and really just can't find a balance between the sky and building that I like without killing saturation entirely, so i'm sorta feeling like scrapping the photo entirely.

Shooting it at a different time of day would have helped alot. You may want to pick up a polarizing filter or some split neutral density filters to help in the future.

Yeah, i definitely need to get a new one. I had one for my 18-105mm (67mm) but after switching to the 18-200mm (72mm) i'm finding i don't have a use for it. I do have some filter adapters on order and will probably just pick up big filters from now on, since my other lens has a 77mm diameter.

Perhaps I'll make it back another time; the site is huge and i'm sure there are spots I didn't explore.

Thanks!

I dunno - that thing looked pretty rusted out. Though, someone made it up to the top to add that graffiti *somehow*...

In any case, there were definitely a few 'is this stuff i'm walking on bouncing/sagging?! moments' when we were there, adding to the uh... character... of the place. fun times

yeah - the window frame looks like its partially blocking a pretty cool smoke stack of some kind. i'd consider less window frame and more rusty stack. other than that - pretty cool shot!

Thats not a stack, it's a pipe. A pipe the scrappers musta missed. But to get further out onto that sill in order to get the frame out of the shot she probably would have to be stupid. I was hanging out on the edges of those sills, they are not exactly safe. Bits were crumbing down under my hands and feet (I'm either very stupid or very skilled, I haven't decided yet. Probably stupid).

Perhaps play around with it in photoshop and see what can be done with cropping? Just dont go back and hang out on the sill. If you do, I will hang out on the floor bellow and catch you : ) lol.

Here's a shot and indication of the spot where this was taken from. As Dresden mentions, the circled area shows pipes rather than stacks.

I imagine it might be interesting and safer to lean out and get a good shot of the water tower if i'd been closer in, but leaning on this particular section of wall could have been a bad idea, as a 90 degree turn to the right would show you what happened to the rest of the building:

In any case, here are a couple of fixes, based on the feedback so far; the main difference between the two is the crop, but i omitted the blur and toned down the sky a bunch.

Thanks for all of your feedback, everyone

In hindsight, perhaps sticking my tripod out and triggering remotely would have worked?

edit: risky and unpredictable though.
