Mine Exploration Trip Feeler (Central Victoria, Australia)

I was out in the central Victorian goldfields today (Creswick/Clunes), on business unrelated to UE and I realized (surprise, surprise) that there is an absolutely staggering amount of abandoned mining sites in the area, and that Ive never really heard of anyone doing any exploring of them.

So I figured I'd make this post to see if I could generate any interest in a possible meetup or camping trip to go out and explore some of these places. I'm thinking a multi day kinda thing exploring the areas and workings around some of these mines, as well as the shafts themselves, plus maybe a few ghost towns for good measure.

Again, this is very much a feeler thread just to see if anyone would be interested at all so please feel free to chime in with any comments or suggestions.

I'd be interested if there was some specific sites in mind.

Do you have much experience exploring mines?

Obviously a full itinerary would be worked out as soon as I have a rough idea of who (if anyone) is interested and if things like rope access are a possibility.

I had quite a bit of experience when I was younger on family land (sadly sold now) and currently average a couple of trips a year to explore mining areas and ghost towns (mainly in the alpine area of Victoria)

I know quite a few explorers who aren't on UER, if you wanted I could ask around and see if there's any interest? Sure there would be.

Absolutely! I would've posted this on the Cave Clan boards as well as here, but it appears my account has been deleted, I would guess due to inactivity (working nights and weekends left very little time to join in on any expo's)

There are so many people on the probation board who we never hear from again that it's hard to follow up every member and see if they still want their account. If you email the info address you should be able to get your account back.

Understandable. It's really my fault for not being more active. I'll send an email and see what happens.

Oy, any chance on being on that board even though I'm an impatient bastard who slags off anyone who won't respond to my emails within 1.25 hours?
I mean at least with me, what you see is what you get.

Jeez Dan, I thought you would have been on to that a bit more quickly (even though you're talking about Sydney and Loki about Melbourne

Kontour, my ex-was from Ballarat so I was there pretty much every second weekend in 1997 when she went to Uni there for a year.

Are you talking about old stuff from ye olde days or newer stuff that has shut down?

Plenty of good stuff there if that is what you are into.

Cheers,

Doug

I'm game. Y'all pitch in for a plane ticket and I'll bring a thousand feet of rope and associated gear.

=D

Really though, that sounds like a pretty sweet area. Hope you guys work something out. Might check the overlays for the area and see what shows up.

Either or really. Heritage Victoria did a huge inventory of mining sites across Victoria back in the late 90's (Found here for anyone interested: http://tinyurl.com/49wcvtb) and I've been trawling through that looking for sites and then heading out on my days off to see if I can find them. I've had moderate success with this method (Most of the location lists are from over 10 years ago, and a lot can happen to a site in that time) but what I have found has been pretty cool, including an open shaft that I believe extends to a depth of around 620 feet, and some sites around Bendigo that were last worked in the late 50's, making them by mine exploration standards, relatively safe. I'd be grateful for any tips on locations/areas though.

Indecently, if anyone feels like tagging along on a day trip or two to explore stuff out that way feel free to hit me up.

Therrin, would we have to cover excess luggage fees as well? I'm guessing those might be more than the ticket!

You're probably dead-on accurate! You pay the ticket, I'll pay for luggage. =P

Hell, it'd be cheaper to buy the stuff there instead of shipping it. And then, hey, just leave it with you!

Hope you guys have a really good time though. Don't take shortcuts on the safety aspects. Keep us informed. =D

Sounds pretty cool.

I found a few decent looking ones in the Ballarat district, but unfortunately all the lower levels flooded once they turned off the pumps.

I've done hundreds of mines across Victoria but if you ever head down my way (Gippsland) then let me know as I mainly check stuff out down here now.

Good luck.

Cheers

Not sure if anyone is interested, but i thought I'd put up a few photos from my various mine exploring trips around the state.

This first mine I found on the side of the road in the middle of high country Victoria.

You can just see the top of the adit in the centre of the picture. Interestingly, the wood used to shore the portal up appears to have been replaced relatively recently.

Upon entering the mine, I was treated to a knee deep wade through water that was colder than my ex girlfriend. This continued for around 20 meters until the ground rose slightly and dried up.

This is looking down the tunnel after exiting the water.

Both the old tramway tracks and a rusted pipe ran through the entire tunnel with minimal damage as this close up of the pipe shows

If I had to guess, I'd say this mine may have been last worked in the 40's just due to how intact it was. It's probably the best preserved abandoned mine I've found in Victoria.

Proceeding further up the tunnel I came across a small stoped area with what might have been a working platform built above it

Apologies for the blurry picture, but the wooden beams were dripping wet and rotting and I certainly wasn't sticking around to see how long they'd hold the roof up for.

The tunnel continued past this stope and into another short flooded area

With the stope only a few metres behind me, I realized that the threat of false floors here was very real and, as I was alone, I decided to turn back.

I'll be heading out again in the coming weeks to hopefully explore this mine in much more detail and if anyone wants to come along shoot me a pm.

More to come

It's go time? How many people are actually really considering going to this?
I'm down for sure.
