How many trips before your imagination stops going into overdrive?

I'm talking about solo/duo night trips. I tried approaching abandoned buildings at night but man...my imagination just simply spins into overdrive, and I get paranoid. I think people are staring at me though the windows of the abandoned buildings, alarm detectors everywhere and yes, ghosts, crazy serial killers hideouts all start popping into my head.

Will this feeling ever go away? Or am I doomed to explore during day time?

Was wondering if there are any solo/duo night explorers and any tips on overcoming this psychological effect?

I heard stories about people sleeping over at abandoned places just to conquer/face their fears.

It gets less spooky. And varies depending on the location, and your familiarity with it. I've been perfectly fine on-site somewhere one night, then way spooked another night at the same place a few months later.

Here's a write-up of a multi-day solo trip you may find interesting. This guy has some balls, and teh photo skillz.

Hehe already read that one. Doesn't really count though since he has a 'companion'.

Shits n' giggles is also a popular reason.

The more times you enter a building and realise that it's not full of killers/rapists/copyright lawyers the less anxious you'll be.

Although I still need a new pair of pants after walking into a room and seeing myself in a mirror out of the corner of my eye.

copy right lawyers, now thats scary

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.

I've been exploring for over 20 years, and the feeling hasn't left me yet.

And I hope it never will.

I kinda agree with what Ninjalicious said on that subject, The fear will subside a little, but having that fear is what makes us cautious and keeps us alive. I mean there are times I freak out and back out of certain situations, but usually I just concentrate on staying calm and enjoying the trip. The really good stuff is always hidden behind the scary stuff

i don't often do night explores, but i'm a dedicated soloist and pre-dawner so i am usually making my entry alone and in the dark. a couple times, if i thought a location might be sketchy, my anxiety has cost me entire nights sleep - which works out ok when you have to hit the road at 4am anyway.

i remember my first few times - staring at the dark, opened windows, hearing faint bangs coming from inside and being petrified to enter. but the more you do this the more comfortable it will feel.

but once i entered an abandoned hotel under cover of dark. i climbed a fire escape, entered thru a 3rd story window, then proceeded down the hall. it was extremely dark, but there was a tiny bit of predawn light so i kept my flashlight off so as not to draw attention to myself. but the fire escape had made alot of noise so whoever was in there knew i was there. suddenly a door to a room opened, and a man ran out straight toward me. he ran right past me, into the room i came from, out the window, climbed noisily down the fire escape, and ran away. i thought i was going to have a heart attack. so yeah, sometimes your fear is real. it makes sense.

new places still make me worry. but return trips are usually much less stressful. go enough times and the place begins to feel like an old friend.

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I've only been on a handful but it hasn't been mitigated at all.

Oddly the scariest part for me is never walking down a dark hallway, it's walking back back out.

It's even more odd because I don't believe in ghosts or poltergeists or any of that.

I can't tell you the number of times I've followed a light to the end of a hallway only to be met with a bolted door, turning around to find the route I JUST WALKED DOWN to be much scarier than it was a minute before. It doesn't matter if I peeked into every room on the way down, it doesn't matter if it's bright and sunny outside, it gets to me.

When I have to walk out I do that thing where I keep my flashlight pointing behind me because light keeps the ghosts away or something.

I'm sure it's some survival mechanism at work.

As for that guy sleeping in a place... fuck... no. Unless I put 20 ranks in Trap and could summon a Trash Golem I would never do that.

Gravity, it's not just a good idea, it's the law.

The fear is what make exploring so addictive. I'm not an adrenaline junkie outside of exploring, but the feelings you get while exploring are real, not manufactured. It's scarier than the scariest movie.

I just went alone to an abandoned nursing home, which was reaaally unsettling at first. After a while I settled in, got used to the ambience (or lack of it), and started taking pictures. Then I started hearing footsteps around corners and door latches being shaken, which seemed to follow me from wing to wing. I thought security or someone saw me go inside, though I didn't see anyone on my way in. When I started hearing things in a wing on the opposite side of the building, my mind ran away with the notion that I was being followed throughout the building. This was my first time exploring alone, and until I got paranoid it was kinda nice.

I'm still new to exploring, so that didn't help my nerves at all

The Viaduct runs through the Callowhill Loft District, which is overrun with hipsters. This is just another one of those things a hipster would probably do.

My imagination goes wild every night, when I have an explore planned the next day. It's all about "what if??" Even for places I have been multiple times and hit up on a regular basis. It's just the way our minds work-- as soon as the camera comes out, i'm oblivious to everything around me, and that includes creepy things. So, once i'm in the building i'm not worried. it's just the night before stuff.

I've already been a dozen, and if I don't have someone watching my back I feel anxious and constantly spin and check EVERY single room on my way through the abandonments to make sure no one will come after me. Either that, or I just run down the hallway, and when I get to the end, I look to see if anyone followed me... Point being, my imagination only goes wild in dark hallways, with drak rooms on each
