| | | As someone new to the hobby i was wondering if anybody has any tips for setting up rappell systems from scaffolding? I recently went to a bridge in the process of being renovated and thought it would be pretty cool to rappell down to just over the river below. anyways thank you and here is a picture of the site

| | | I don't think you've done this before because if you have it's pretty straight forward.
Pick a sturdy anchor, tie off, rappel down, ascend up.

QFT. Should be plenty of good anchor points around. If you've never done it before, find a buddy who has, or at the very least practice on some small stuff first..

| | | just make sure you're not pulling too hard sideways on scaffolding, it does tend to have a thin base. I freeclimbed some 9 stories of scaffolding not long ago (so 3 tall proper stories. xD) Just make sure that you anchor to one of the supports, and try to avoid having it on the top floor. Obviously the boards and loose crossmembers of scaffolding aren't solid enough for putting several hundred pounds on.
Same scaffolding with what is challenging me at the moment in the background

| | | I've done the scaffolding on a 4 story building. Smoothness is the key. In the picture it looks like hung, not freestanding scaffolding? You can get scaffolding biners, but unless you're doing a lot of climbing, it's probably not worth it, you can always tie on by throwing a webbing loop over something. I'd tie off to the bridge, not the scaffolding, if you're going to do a rappel, but that's just because I'm always paranoid that the scaffolding is going to tip over.

Tie the end of the rope to your butt so you can't rap off it by accident, OR get a rope that ends 4' above the river, and rap off it on purpose! [last edit 10/30/2010 1:07 AM by MindHacker - edited 1 times]

| | | Wear gloves. Certain scaffolding are more then happy to give you metal splinters.
