| | Possible trip. Great link. < on 10/19/2010 2:22 PM >
| | | My husband and I where having a drink at our favorite wine bar the other night when we struck up a conversation with one of the employees. Come to find out he is huge into the idea of exploring but he has yet to actually do it. He has spent countless hours researching different places he would like to see. He turned my husband and I onto some great places, this one was my favorite http://www.forgott...oit.com/index.html So my husband and I decided to start planning a trip to Detroit. Has any one been to explore there yet? If so what places should we be sure not to miss? Thanks...

| | | I'm going to Detroit this winter. Imbroglio went last year and has some amazing photos from his visit. I've done a shitload of research on the area, and some popular places of interest are: Michigan Central Depot - MUST SEE Packard Motors - HUGE Lee Plaza Apartments Fisher Plant Detroit Marine Terminal Broderick Towers Michigan Bell Building There's a lot more, but those are the Disney-like attractions most people go there for. You must, must, must watch this independent film called "Requiem for Detroit". It's the best documentary I've ever watched, and I have wanted to post about it on here for a long time, but figured most people had already seen it. It goes into detail about the history of Detroit and follows it's demise - blaming a LARGE portion of it on Henry Ford. It also talks about the future of Detroit and how it will be the first "Urban Farming" city in the US. It shows lots of urban exploring too in the film. Probably not many people, including myself before watching the film, know that Henry Ford was responsible for creating the suburbs. He made it a point to move everything out of downtown Detroit so that people had to commute into the city to work, and also making it necessary for housewives to have a car of their own for groceries and daily errands. The film also blames a lot of Detroit's racial tension on Ford. If you can find it on the internet, try to stream it... it's really a great watch. It's kind of amazing to me that a city that was built for 4 million people now has about 600,000 people living there, and are losing more every year.

| | | MCD & Packard ARE indeed "Must sees", as Liquourhead suggests; I would include Lee Plaza in that category as well; most photographed abandoned piano in the world. I would also strongly recommend (if it's still accessible) the spectacular Woodward Ave Presby Church. Here's a link to a set of images I took in Detroit when I was there a couple years ago: http://www.flickr....72157608683520554/

| | | My girlfriend (omg I can finally say that, yay!) grew up in Detroit, and she was amazed at what's been abandoned. We'll probably go up there one of these days -- I should start lurking on the Great Lakes forum and see if I can find a guide. In the meanwhile, she's anxious to come to the next DFW meetup and listen to our tall tales (some of which are almost true, others are too true to be believed). Bring your Detroit-related questions.
J'ai toujours fait une prière à Dieu, qui est fort courte. La voici: "Mon Dieu, rendez nos ennemis bien ridicules!" Dieu m'a exaucé. |
