First real explore

A few months ago, my friends stumbled upon an abandoned nursing home in our area, with one lazy guard wandering the grounds. They found a way in, but didn't actually enter. It wasn't until this week that we were able to head over there and actually check out the building. We spent about 1 1/2 hours inside, and we're going back tomorrow (with my camera) to spend an entire afternoon checking it out.

Now, the real reason I'm posting this. Once inside, we noticed the smell of mold and, shortly after, saw it first-hand. Ceiling tiles were crumbling, buckets were spilling over (someone had set them out to catch the drips, it seems the roof isn't fairing well), and what appeared to be black mold (not positive it was "black mold", whatever it was there was a lot of it). The building may also have asbestos, but I didn't notice any particles in the air. None of us had brought masks that night, since we didn't intend to stay long. When we noticed the pooling and musty smell, we took off our over-shirts and tied them over our mouths and noses to attempt to filter the air.
My friend has 2 respirators and filters for both, and a few surgical-style construction masks, which we'll be bringing tomorrow. What grade filters should we use for the respirators (obviously P100 would be ideal, but what's the minimum we should use?), and should we worry about doing it without protection our first time? :3

If I had a dollar for every time I'd entered a hazardous environment without sufficient protection I'd have enough dollars to pay for my future health care costs.

(You should be fine, just don't make a habit of it)

A N95 grade respirator/dust mask would be sufficient to block mold spores.
A P100 is necessary to block asbestos. Asbestos might give you cancer in n years, but what won't? Mold will make you feel really shitty, really quick. So, just be sure to keep the mold out.

90% of the time I explore..it's on a random. Places I find on my way..Leaving me without most of the necessary equipment or adequate protection from most hazards.
You'll be alright..If you can avoid it, I suggest doing so..If not. Explore at your own risk I suppose..Usually the results are worth the risks. (in my opinion)

Thanks for the info tholcomb, and I've seen that page before.

Chris, I'd rather take a quick look around and then come back with whatever I need. I've always been kinda nervous about airborne things, be it gas / spores / whatever

Just an FYI, its not so much the particles you can see that you need be worried about--asbestos particulate is often too small to see (hence the need for a p100 mask...) and as such sight is a terrible way to judge the presence of it in an environment.

surgical-style construction masks

Those are totally useless unless you are scrapping the place and hacking through dry plaster walls. Will not filter mold, asbestos, or flatulence.

there are a myriad of threads out there right that deal with respirators---also, if you have a beard, shave it if you want your respirator to seal properly.

I have never worn ay protection exploring anywhere.. including malt and firestone, two of the bigest, most popular/commonly visited locations in southern Ontario. neither are all too bad.. but some locations in firestone, depending on the time of year, you CAN see particles, in the air, and can deffinately see, and feel the air in your lungs.

poin being, you shoul dbe fine. so, no need to worry

Ah yes, an anecdotal experience obviously shows that there is no danger. These things take time to both accumulate and to act on your body. Dont get me wrong, I'm not a person who takes a respirator MOST places that I go--nor am I a gear junkie... I am however interested in providing sound safety information to those in need... just because youve done this a few times and see no ill effect doesnt mean you dont have asbestos, or silica, or any number of other nasty particulates building up in your lungs. telling someone its fine because youve done it a few times shows a real lack of understanding of how this stuff works on your part and is a dis-service to those seeking REAL information on the subject.

well shit >.<

We ended up splitting into 2 groups of two, and whoever had the respirators went to the basement / boiler room and other generally stagnant places. We didn't end up staying long, since my mom broke her foot and needed me to drive her to the hospital.

I think I'll be picking up a respirator and some filters for our next visit, so I don't have to worry about sharing...

E-bay has some good deals on 3M respirators with the p100 filters. I just picked up a new one with 8 extra filters for 26 shipped. It's worth it. If the po-po searches your bag though it's pretty obvious you were headed into an abandoned building and not just "out taking pictures". Keep that in mind.

Well yea, my friends and I were talking about that on the way over. I ended up being the only one carrying just a camera ("What, officer? No, I have no idea who these people are or why they have respirators and flashlights. I'm just here to take pictures of the building.")

Thanks for the tips, and I think I'm gonna check out the prices in nearby AirGas stores. I'd rather get one new than from Ebay, if the price is reasonable.

you can expect a mask to run you 30.00 USD with P100 filters. Keep in mind they only filter particulates--not organic vapor... Also, make sure you get one that fits your face--they come sized in small, medium, and large generally but big box stores often only carry medium or large.

pretty much, but as with everything it always differs, some organic vapours need to be in high concentration to affect you, but it's best to protect yourself regardless of what it is, places like old meat works have ammonia freezers...that stuff will take you out pretty quick if it's at a high level.
