Tower of Power

I took a rather long break from UE when school started recently, and my pursuit of photography took a break as a result.

I picked back up when I spotted a massive high voltage electrical tower that was being constructed near my town. it had to be done.

just a few photos taken with my canon powershot A530 P&S and my canon Rebel XT. I'm working on getting my long exposures down, but I'm reasonably pleased with some of these.

^(Probably overdone HDR...)^

any tips? thanks!

2 is awesome. 3 would be more awesome if the pipe wasn't right down the middle.

With six police cars passing underneath me during the time I was up there, the rule of thirds wasn't the first thing on my mind at that moment...but yes, that would definitely help a couple of these shots.

I really love 1 and 4

About 1: I actually am one of the haters of overdoing HDR. The fact that I didn't even notice that it was HDR, even not since I know it is, means you did it right.

I agree... the only thing that gave it away for me was the slight "fuzzy" look. Not out of focus, just fuzz...telltale of HDR. BUT...that being said, exposure and processing-wise? That's hard to avoid with any movement at all. I'd say you nailed it. Good job on the photos!

Yup. Assuming there wasn't a tornado just out of frame.

#2 came out great, you could dial down the white balance on a shot like that to get the colors looking more natural, but I like it the way it is.

#4 is pretty cool but very noisy and soft. Hard to say what the issue is without the exposure information, but it looks like you're bumping up against the limitations of your equipment.

i think if he just cropped the upper right half it would be nice. then the pipes would frame it.

Beat me to it.

I like number four - could use some less noise, but it's a nice shot.

You should look into a gorillapod for when you're in places like that - much easier to set up than a regular tripod, and helps with the nighttime shots.

A Gorillapod is an amazing idea! I've heard they have some issues with moving around on extremely long exposures, but with the whole scaffolding swaying back in forth in the wind, I don't think that would have made a difference.

There's a lot of noise in a some of them because I took those with my P&S on my point and shoot. I packed light on my first trip in case I had to leg it...I've learned that 15 lb tripods are not something you want on your back as you're jumping fences.

Thanks for all the tips!
