| | | Dunno if this should be posted in NE section, or here since I live here, but anyways here it is. My wife and I with another coupled traveled to Weston W. Va all due to a link a buddy of mine sent me on places you can "legally" explore. I guess it takes the fun out of it but Im a big chicken anyway. So we gassed up the car and a away we went. We drove to Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for an over night stay last month on Friday the 13th for a historical/paranormal tour. The building and complex is incredible, lots of history and paranormal stuff(for those of you into that kind of thing). Over 240,000 sf to run around in. Here are some pics from our journey. Also hit the Waverly Hills sanitarium in KY on way home, but camera had crashed by then.

| | | I don't understand this thing about places you can legally explore. What is that all about? I see a lot of cars in that parking lot but the inside looks like any other abandonment. If it's abandoned how can you legally explore it? Do you have that link by any chance?

| | | Awesome! I'm hoping to make it there sometime. I know you can do the overnight thing at Waverly Hills too. Those are some awesome places. Great pics, would like to see more. Do you have a flickr account where you may have more?

| | | Thanks for the replies guys- From what I know that it had shut down in the mid 90's and opened back up for historical/paranormal purposes just a few years ago. I think the proceeds from the overnight stays and explorations go toward preservation, but the place remains pretty much untouched since the last patients were there. There are a few places off limits due to weak floors or falling debris, but I was really suprised at how much access you have to the facility. http://www.trans-a...lunaticasylum.com/ TALA is def worth the drive to especially if you love a good road trip. I dont have a flicker account but my friend has his shutterfly account, I will call him and get the address for rest of pics. Waverly Hills was pretty impressive, the tour wasnt that great though. Right now they are using the proceeds from their tours to eventually turn it into a 5 star "haunted hotel"

| | | nothing wrong with legally exploring a location - youre still exploring it - youre still shooting it and the money paid goes toward preserving the facility so that many more can enjoy them for years to come. ill be at the photo tour next saturday 8/13 - couldnt pay my $150 fast enough for both sessions (and since i am traveling farther than any other participant that day they have agreed to let me stay on site during the 2 hour break when everyone else will be gone! weeee!) they give tours everyday but the photo tour grants us access to the civil war wing, the medical building, the geriatric hospital and of course - that magnificent kirkbride. 4 stories, 1/4 mile long and effing beautiful! cant wait to fill up every 8 gig card i have. and i am well happy about meeting up with the crew we have assembled for my first two days in maryland and the two days ill be in philly. see you guys in a week - and thanks in advance to all of you that are helping out with this trip. im sure we will all be posting our shots from our trips together here before too long. also - this should be in the mid-atlantic section - not the northeast and certainly not the south! Generally yes. And if the OP wants it moved, I will move it. But since he is simply reporting on his trip, I'm ok with leaving it here since it's only a few photos and these locations are well represented in Mid-Atlantic already. Just as I will be with some of the pictures from your upcoming trip to Mass, if you want to post a few of those.

| | | its going to be super good. we will be granted access to the civil war wing, the medical facility, the geriatric hospital and of course the magnificent, 4 story, 1/4 mile long kirkbride building. and a private tour of the cemetery (meh) but all told - its going to be sick. i leave out at 5AM thursday morning and seriously cant think of anything else right now - super hard to be at work - super hard to just be in texas for that matter! ive had weston tunnel vision since i bought my tickets way back in february!

| | | They must be either charging a fortune for tours or expecting some super heavy traffic to be taking tours if they plan on turning Waverly Hills into a 5 star hotel. The asbestos removal from the tunnel system alone would cost a fortune.

| | | Very jealous of you insulinguy-we were scheduled to go back in Septmember but due to work schedule we are taking a shorter cheaper trip to Yorktown Texas instead. But yes the place is awesome. Hopefully the yorktown hospital exploration will be exciting, we are stoked about it.
